The Role and the Department

The Projects & Infrastructure team is responsible for construction project delivery across the Durham University estate. The team manage a large capital programme from inception to completion, delivering projects on budget, on programme and to a high standard of quality.

The Assistant Electrical Building Services Engineer will support Electrical Engineers and the wider team in the effective management, provision, alteration and upgrade of the University's electrical infrastructure.

Forming necessary links between all stakeholders you will contribute to the successful delivery of a range of projects/programmes ensuring that all works are carried out to the required quality standard, adhere to best practice principles and are compliant with current statutory/safety requirements and approved codes of practice. The improvement in facilities supports academic research and enhances the student experience.

The Estates and Facilities Directorate provides essential services to Durham University and is responsible for managing, maintaining and developing the infrastructure and building fabric of the various campuses.

From early 2025 the base location for this role will change from our Durham City Centre site to our exciting new professional services hub based at Boldon House. Boldon House is situated on the outskirts of Durham near the Arnison Centre in Pity Me. Boldon House will bring a number of professional services teams together in a vibrant office environment which supports collaborative working and is designed to embrace hybrid working. Development Role

This is a development role, and you will develop electrical building services engineering and construction project management skills, leadership attributes and skills. You will undertake a development programme leading to a formal Building Services Engineering qualification.

The qualification will form part of a development plan focusing on the requirements of the Grade 7 role, while also considering your individual needs. This plan will be regularly reviewed and forms the basis of the assessment to move to the Grade 7 role.

Upon successful completion of your development programme and plan, you will move into a Grade 7 Electrical Building Services Engineer role, the job description for which can be found HERE.

If you are unable to meet the full requirements and performance levels of the Grade 7 post at the end of the development process, you may be retained in the Grade 6 role.

Qualifications/Experience

1. Five GCSEs at least Grade C or level four (or equivalent) including English Language and Mathematics or a Post-16 qualification or equivalent experience.

2. Successfully completed a recognised engineering building services apprenticeship/training programme in electrical engineering or related discipline or equivalent experience.

3. Experience of working in the building services industry with knowledge and expertise in electrical installations/systems.

4. Experience of providing advice and guidance to a range of customers and colleagues.

5. Experience of implementing policies, procedures and safe working practice.

Skills/Abilities/Knowledge

6. Sound technical knowledge on the installation, operation and maintenance of electrical building services/systems.

7. Good oral and written communication skills including the ability to develop effective working relationships, both internally and externally.

8. Proven IT skills including the use of Microsoft 365 applications.

9. Knowledge and experience of health and safety regulations and compliance.

10. Ability to solve problems and decide on and plan appropriate solutions.

11. Ability to provide support on the delivery of infrastructure projects.

12. Committed to continuing professional development.

13. Ability to work collaboratively with other team members to ensure the delivery of high-quality services.

Desirable Criteria

1. Educated to HNC/HND or degree level or equivalent experience in a relevant discipline.

2. Hold or working towards full membership of a relevant professional institute i.e. CIBSE, IET.

3. An understanding and working knowledge of high voltage distribution/networks.

4. Sound technical knowledge on the design of Electrical Building Services.

5. Conversant with developments in sustainability with experience of developing and delivering low energy solutions.

6. Experience of Project delivery and cost control.

7. Knowledge of BIM

Service Delivery

The Assistant Electrical Building Services Engineer will contribute to the delivery of a professional, customer-focussed electrical engineering support service to all stakeholders to facilitate the provision of a safe, effective and reliable electrical infrastructure specific to the needs of the University.

• Work independently or with other staff or contractors across the University to deliver infrastructure services and projects.

• Assist in formulating electrical building services design briefs and participate in all stages of the design development process on capital, minor and refurbishment projects to ensure that the optimal design solution and quality standards for electrical building services engineering are realised.
