The Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) is an executive agency of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, and works on behalf of the Scottish Government and Welsh Government. Our diverse teams of over 3,000 skilled and committed professionals come together to provide research, advice and support to UK Government for safeguarding animal, public and plant health for the benefit of the environment and the economy.
To provide leadership to the Biological Products Unit and Cell and Tissue culture. The post holder will be responsible for the management and delivery of a wide range of reagents and culture media in support of surveillance, research, commercial and disease response across the agency.
The post holder will management Defra Tuberculin supply contract and licenced products portfolio.
The post holder will be responsible for RPU�s Home Office Licence.
Job description
Management production activities in culture media, bacterial antigens, Tuberculin contract, freeze drying. Ensuring products meets the high-quality standards demanded by customers. Developing strategy and plans for the unit production activities.Manage cell and tissue culture to ensure supply to customers is maintained. Ensure quality and customer expectations are managed by engaging with customer and commercial meetings. To maximise and develop commercial income from tissue culture sales.Management of UK�s tuberculin, Anthrax vaccine contingency supply and BadgerBCG supply contracts. Ensuring supply and quality of the products by engaging with suppliers, VMD, customers and Defra policy. Provide briefings to these groups on a regular basis.To ensureACDP3/SAPO 3/Schedule 5 containment facilities are managed safely and conform to current safety legislation. To lead at HSE, MHRA, CTSA inspections.To ensure that BPU/CTC maintain safety and safety policies as defined in the APHA Health and Safety Policy. Ensure the work carried out by the teams complies with appropriate legislation.To ensure production activities comply with the appropriate quality standard ISO9001, GDP and GMP. To contribute to the departments quality system review. To maintain the units business continuity and contingency plans.Maintain RPU�s Home Office Licence, ensuring all ASPA and APHA requirements are met.Person specification
Extensive management experience in a laboratory setting.Experience of delivering production to time and quality standards.Good planning, management skills and a good working knowledge of production techniques are required to ensure reagents are produced to meet tight deadlines.Good understanding of the requirements of containment facilities operating to ACDP3/SAPO3/Schedule 5.Experience in managing Home Office Licence and animal studies.Qualifications
Degree in science subject, or suitable career experience.
Ways of working
Flexibility in working hours is required if called upon to finish a particular urgent task or call upon in an event of an outbreak. Travel may be required to various different locations around the country for example for training courses and meetings.�
Defra continues to support a blended working model and successful candidates are expected to work from the Weybridge site in order to connect with their colleagues, as required by their role and business team needs. Defra�s current policy is that no more than 40% of the working week should be spent at home, averaged over a month unless exceptional circumstances apply and/or the post-holder is a contractual home worker.
The successful candidate will need to comply with a number of health protocols and wear protective clothing and Respiratory Personal Protective Equipment (RPPE) as required. The work of the post can be physically demanding.
Depending on the areas of work involved you will be expected to have any necessary vaccinations or health surveillance. This will be arranged by the Health Team, Weybridge. It may also be necessary to undergo a pre-employment medical assessment.
A valid full driving licence is necessary or access to an alternative means of transport.
Due to access requirements to biosecure areas, individuals must be physically able.
Out of hours work may be required in the event of an incident.�
