Supply chains and technology are increasingly globally contested. Manufacturing policy is increasingly at the heart of UK economic policy � both domestic and international. Advanced Manufacturing is a priority growth sector, and we are leading this important work for the government.�
The team is recruiting for a highly motivated Grade 6 to lead on exciting and demanding policy projects in the Advanced Manufacturing Directorate. The exact portfolio will be determined based on the specific policy priorities of the Government of the day but current projects the team leads include: the UK Battery Strategy, and reviewing the evidence on Access to Finance for manufacturing scale ups.�
This role is demanding and high profile so the postholder will need to be comfortable working at pace, using their judgement independently, with strong political awareness and an ability to work closely and diplomatically with multiple stakeholders to develop and deliver complex policy and programmes. �
You will be an experienced and confident policy maker in a high-profile team covering an expanding portfolio.��
In addition, you will be expected to be an inclusive and confident leader of a team of three policy professionals. You will make proactive and consistent contributions to help run a happy, inclusive, and effective team, including, building policy and project capability throughout the directorate. �

We will support you in developing your policymaking and policy delivery expertise with ongoing senior engagement and site visits in addition to a robust comprehensive learning and development offer. You will work closely with economists, analysts and a range of officials within the Department.�
Job description
Responsibilities will include:�
Leading the development of a range of demanding policy projects within the directorate, covering priority areas across advanced manufacturing. These will typically last one to six months, and usually have senior ministerial attention. Initial projects for the post-holder may include topics such as: how to support the growth of the manufacturing sector through work on access to finance, the role of regulations to support innovation, and Government-industry collaboration in emerging manufacturing sectors.��Providing leadership and management to a team of policy professionals including professional support, and pastoral care.��Working collaboratively with other policy professionals, analysts, and economists to understand complex issues quickly and develop robust and evidence-based solutions. This will include working with sometimes conflicting quantitative and qualitative data to develop a strong evidence base.�Establishing collaborative relationships with key stakeholders from across government � in particular, , HM Treasury, other government departments � and private firms, think tanks, trade associations and arms-length bodies.�Actively contributing to the work of the directorate�s senior management team, a growing team of policy officials building a supportive and inclusive environment that maximises their potential. You will deputise for the deputy director and director as needed.��Person specification
Essential criteria�
Strong experience leading growth policy development and delivery.�Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate clearly on complex issues at pace.�Experience leading work which involves multiple stakeholders across government and/or in business and civil society, often with conflicting viewpoints.�Desirable criteria �
Experience developing manufacturing, or other priority sector, policies
