Job Description
Based at Angus Archives, Hunter Library, Restenneth, Forfar.
Help us change lives in Angus by inspiring Healthy, Active and Creative lifestyle choices.
ANGUSalive offers residents and visitors to Angus a wealth of services through engagement with our sports centres, country parks, theatres and venues, museums, galleries, archives and libraries.
Our business is everything to do with people and that's why our staff are so important to our success.
You will work as an Archives & Local History Research Advisor exclusively on the Archives’ successful Museums Galleries Scotland funded project to deliver Roseberry: A Legacy of Slavery.
Angus, like much of Scotland, has historical ties to the transatlantic slave trade, yet this aspect remains underrepresented in local museums. The Langland family collection at Angus Archives includes significant documents detailing their involvement in slavery in Jamaica. Roseberry: A Legacy of Slavery aims to catalogue, digitise, and enhance accessibility to these documents, research local family connections, curate an exhibition at Montrose Museum for Black History Month, and develop educational materials for schools.
You will need to hold an SCQF level 5 or above in Skills & Sources for Family & Local History in Scotland or a related subject. Experience of family and local history research and working with local history and archive collections is essential.
You will be responsible for reorganising the Langland family papers, cataloguing to recognised archival standards, digitising, and helping to facilitate online accessibility through our collections management system.
You will help source and coordinate volunteers to ensure efficient processing of archival materials.
You will conduct genealogical research into the familial connections of the Langland family in Angus using Angus Archives’ extensive collections as well as online family history resources.
You will work with ANGUSalive Museums colleagues to research and curate a small exhibition as part of their wider World Cultures exhibition during Black History Month .
You will generate social media content for the Angus Archives Facebook page, and liaise with Marketing to inform audiences of the work on the project.
You will use your research to develop educational materials for Angus schools.
To do well in this role you will be able to demonstrate our key behaviours in customer service excellence and continuous improvement. A friendly outgoing personality and the ability to use your initiative are essential.
You'll find working with our customers, colleagues and partners is interesting and varied as well as providing an exciting opportunity for you to help shape the future of cultural services in Angus. What's more, ANGUSalive offers a rewards package with generous holiday allowance and employer pension contributions.
If you can commit to working with us for the people of Angus and are interested in joining the team to become an ambassador for ANGUSalive, we'd love to hear from you.
This job is temporary for up to 9 months (40 weeks) from date of appointment.
Applications from ANGUSalive employees on a secondment basis will be considered. You must have the approval of your line manager.
