About us:  

The semi-independent service has self-contained rooms in homes across Norfolk. The homes provide accommodation for Looked After Children or young people Leaving Care that are between the ages 16 -18. We help our young people to develop their independent living skills and wellbeing, enabling them to be ready to progress fully onto independence post 18. 

Key responsibilities:  

To engage in the effective support of young people; including offering guidance and advice, building positive relationships and supporting young people to develop effective independent living skills. To be a positive role model to the young people engaged in the independent living scheme.  To advise, help assist with domestic tasks within the accommodation at a level and frequency agreed with the young person and the Team Manager/Senior.  To form effective relationships with the young people and their families to ensure that their emotional and physical needs are met and those opportunities for their development are maximised.  To ensure that the young person’s views and wishes are sought and reported back to the young person’s social worker and the Team Manager/Senior.  To ensure that good quality written detailed records are maintained regarding the progress of the young people. 

The role requires the support staff to work a shift pattern and it is essential for staff to sleep in as part of the shift. You will be based in a set location in Sprowston but may be required to cover and to travel to other homes throughout the Norfolk area. You will therefore be required to have your own form of transportation.

You will be required to work weekends, evenings, nights, and some bank holidays. You will be required to work a minimum of two 24 hour shifts a week for full time hours giving you a great work/ life balance

You will:  

Be able to display a passion for working with young people and support each young person in overcoming challenges to help prepare them for adult life.  Have a background in semi-independent accommodation or be experienced in working with young people.  Need to be committed to making a difference in the lives of young people.  Be reliable, flexible, have good personal relationships and communication skills as well as high professional standards.  Be able to make sound judgments under pressure and respond effectively in a crisis as there is an element of lone working with up to 4 young people during evenings and weekends particularly. As well as the ability to calmly and effectively manage challenging behaviours that can be displayed by young people, which is crucial to the role.  Have experience in de-escalation techniques  Be required to complete the Level 3 in residential childcare as well as undertaking Norfolk County Council mandatory training.
