The Role and the Department

An opportunity exists for a Grade 4 Technician to join the research laboratory of Professor Przyborski in the Department of Bioscience, to assist with its general day-to-day operation. The work of the lab focuses on the development and application of human tissue models for use in research, drug discovery, and consumer product development. Bespoke cell culture techniques and technology are used to build tissue models, and a variety of modern cell and molecular methods employed to analyse them. The successful applicant will join a busy research team comprising postdoctoral scientists and postgraduate students. They will provide technical support for the general upkeep and day-to-day operation of the laboratory. Duties will include supporting the technical work of team members, general lab administration and record keeping, preparation of stock solutions/media/cell stocks, sterilisation of equipment and waste management, stock taking and ordering, monitoring health & safety documentation, and general housekeeping.

The post is available part-time, 0.5 FTE (17.5 hours a week) for 12 months in the first instance. There is the possibility that the role may be extended beyond this 12 month period depending upon funding availability.

Given the technical nature of this role, the applicant will be expected to work on site. Working arrangements are flexible and accommodating, considering the needs of the laboratory and the employee.

What you need to demonstrate when you apply

To be considered for this role, here are the skills/experience we're looking for:

Qualifications/Experience
1. Five GCSE's at least Grade C or level four (or equivalent) including English Language and Mathematics or equivalent experience.
2. Experience of working in a technical environment and working with other more specialist technicians to create, build and construct resources, tools and equipment to meet teaching and research outputs.
3. Experience of working in a team providing advice and guidance to colleagues and customers.
4. Experience of managing time to meet deadlines.

Skills/Abilities/Knowledge
5. Good spoken and written communication skills.
6. Good digital skills including experience in using digital devices and apps including the internet, email, digital communication tools, Microsoft 365 applications, digital booking systems.
7. Knowledge relevant to the role ideally supported by relevant courses or certifications e.g. laboratory skills.
8. Committed to continuing professional development.
9. Knowledge of health and safety issues such as risk assessments.
10. Ability to solve problems and resolve straightforward issues yourself and as part of a team.

Desirable Criteria

11. Previous cell culture experience/aseptic technique
