Main Purpose of Job

The FCDO Health and Safety (H&S) Function sits within the Human Resources Directorate, led by our Chief People Officer. The team is made up of both safety professionals and generalists, working across a large and diverse portfolio of work. The Function is responsible for and involved in:�

Setting the strategic direction for H&S across the FCDO.�Developing and maintaining FCDO H&S Standards.�Providing expertise, guidance and feedback to the organisation on H&S issues and building our safety maturity.�Engaging with internal and external stakeholders and keeping abreast of best practice.�Assuring our activities and sites, ensuring standards and expectations are being met, providing updates on progress against key risks and performance indicators.�Building the capacity of the wider organisation to manage H&S effectively, and empowering individuals to take risk-based decisions pragmatically.�

Roles and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:�

This role is like few others in the FCDO. It requires the successful candidate to lead, implement and drive forward robust health and safety practices and processes on behalf of the FCDO through the design and construction phases of our projects, ensuring we are acting as an intelligent and proactive Client.�

�The successful candidate will:�

Develop H&S Design and Construction related standards and guides, for use by FCDO colleagues and our design and construction supply chain partners.�Develop and subsequently lead our H&S Project Safety Capability, ensuring our projects are compliant with standards and are taking proactive steps to manage risk.�Develop and lead new processes to assure safety is being considered in all phases of the project lifecycle (Hazards in Construction Studies).�Challenge design and construction teams to ensure industry leading H&S approaches are considered throughout all project stages.�Investigate project related H&S incidents, hazards and near misses.�Collate lessons learned from audits/inspections and incidents, and monitor response.�Take the lead on the assessment procurement of new products, manage contracts and liaise with external stakeholders.�Contribute to updates at the FCDO Management Board and Health & Safety Committee.��Deputise for the Head of Safety.�Line manage one HEO staff member.�

�The successful candidate must be willing to travel extensively across the world, on a monthly basis, sometimes at short notice and to locations that may be suffering conflict or humanitarian disasters.� These trips typically last seven days but may be shorter trips, or a full working week.�

Minimum Criteria

NEBOSH National General Certificate in Construction Health and Safety orequivalent qualification (NCRQ, NVQ, BSc, MSc).�Health and Safety programme and project experience, able to switch between the board room and operational sites.�Experience of leading a team, or demonstrable leadership experience through project delivery.�Awareness and understanding of the and general principles of prevention.�Experience of liaising with major stakeholders and supply chain in a sensitive environment.�
