The department of Nursing and Community Health brings together diverse clinical and academic staff with a passion for nursing, mental health, social action and community health. Research within the department aims to improve lives, particularly in the field of long-term conditions. 

The REcovery of peopLE with Aphasia after StrokE (RELEASE-2) project, funded by the Tavistock Trust for Aphasia, aims to examine questions of importance to people living with language problems after stroke. This project will gather anonymised data from completed research studies to examine the relationship between measurements of communication ability and quality of life in people with language problems after stroke. The successful candidate will work within an experienced, dynamic group comprising health services researchers, information specialists, statisticians and administrators with expertise in research related to stroke, aphasia and long-term neurological conditions. The project is an activity of the Collaboration of Aphasia Trialists (CATs), an international research collaboration including more than members across 41 countries.

The Research Associate will work with the principal investigators (PIs), wider CATs collaborative group, information scientist, administrative staff, the GCU contracts office and the statistician as appropriate, to support protocol writing, systematic searching, screening for study eligibility, contacting study PIs to contribute data, leading on data management, data extraction and dataset cleaning, conducting analyses under the supervision of the statistician, and supporting the preparation of reports and publications.

The Research Associate will contribute to dataset identification, organise the contribution of new datasets, and manage data received, including cleaning and analyses, with support from the research team.

The successful candidate will have a degree in a relevant field along with demonstrable experience in conducting high quality research within a Higher Education Institution environment, including knowledge of good research practice, ethics and reporting guidelines. They will have knowledge of good practice for data storage according to GDPR requirements, experience of working as part of an international research collaboration and conducting systematic reviews. Furthermore, the role holder will have experience in data management and extraction for individual participant data meta-analysis (IPDMA) as well as conducting statistical analyses and generating research reports. The successful candidate will have excellent oral and written communication skills, interpersonal and organisational skills.

Desirable criteria include a track record of writing for peer-reviewed publications, knowledge of stroke and aphasia populations and the challenges of conducting research within these populations. Excellent time management skills and an ability to work well within a multidisciplinary research team is also an advantage.
