Job summary

We, at the Joint Services Adventurous Sail Training Centre, deliver offshore sailing Adventurous Training to the Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force in order to develop important leadership and resilience in service personnel. We deliver the full range of shore and water-based training courses from the Royal Yachting Association to over 4500 service personnel each year. In addition, we enable military areas to plan, manage and deliver their own sailing training through provision and support to Continuation Training in the UK and worldwide.

Job description

We are looking for motivated and dynamic individuals who enjoy working in a team to join as a Sailing Instructor.� You will be responsible for providing on water training ranging from Competent crew to Yachtmaster, depending on the instructor qualifications held.

If suitably qualified, you will be required to deliver on-shore training and working with qualified engineering staff manage boat maintenance.

Instructors will be provided with individual induction and team training programmes to enable them to deliver training in line with Army Adventurous Training ethos and equip them to play a full part in our team.

We have access to continuous professional development programmes and provide up to two weeks a year for dedicated personal development, as well as regular staff training.

Working Practice

Our Sailing Instructors are required to deliver training on water for up to 20 working weeks a year. Time Off in Lieu is provided in line with Civil Service policy. For the remainder of the year, instructors will deliver shore-based activities working 37-hour week in line with Civil Service policy.

Our sailing training programme is developed up to 12 months in advance.

Person specification

Applicants must be Royal Yacht Association Yachtmaster Offshore qualified with a Maritime and Coastguard Agency Commercial Endorsement and an in-date seafarers medical - ML5. In addition, applicants must have a Royal Yacht Association First Aid certificate and VHF Operators licence.

Applications will be considered from Yachtmaster Offshore qualified personnel who are not Cruising Instructor qualified or their qualification is out of date, and who have suitable experience to enable completion of the Cruising Instructor examination or Cruising Instructor revalidation within 6 months.

Prepared to learn, understand and deliver Adventurous Leadership and Resilience Training (ALeRT)

Ability to work independently using own initiative with a flexible and proactive approach to work.

Must have experience of working in a fast-paced dynamic environment including the ability to work calmly to achieve tight deadlines.

Well organised with good interpersonal and communication skills

Evidence of collaborative work within a team.

Driving Licence is desirable as instructors are required regularly to travel to other ports elsewhere in the country to join boats.

Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and home-based working.� This is a non-contractual arrangement where all office-based employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in office, subject to capacity and any required workplace adjustments.
