Svitzer is offering the opportunity to train and develop apprentices by providing second to none education opportunities, which are built around our values such as constant care and uprightness.

We want to train and educate marine engineers of the future supported by our expert crews and technical staff who are the best in the business. The education system provides the candidates with a theoretical as well as a practical insight into many different areas of marine engineering, maritime innovation, safety, towage operations, leadership and management.

The aim of the apprenticeship programme is for you to work towards your Small Vessel Chief Engineer (Chief Engineer, less 9000 kilowatt, less 3000 Gross Tonnage) certificate of competency (CoC). This will initially lead you to a Engineering Officer of the Watch Small Vessel CoC (EOOW less 9000 kilowatt, less 3000 Gross Tonnage CoC) before progressing to Small Vessel Chief Engineer. The programme is approximately 5 years in total - It will take approximately 2.5 - 3 years to gain your small vessel EOOW CoC and a further 2 - 2.5 years to gain your Small Vessel Chief Engineer CoC.

  • Full sponsorship - You will be paid to gain the qualifications, without the college fees.
  • Year 1 - Your hourly pay rate will be at apprentice national minimum wage; Year 2 onwards will be the hourly national living wage for your age bracket; you will remain on this pay level of pay until you receive your first CoC.

Requirements for the role:
  • A desire to work in the maritime industry.
  • Motivated, enthusiastic, and hard working.
  • Safety conscious.
  • Punctuality
  • GCSE's (or equivalent) in Maths or Physics at grade 6 (B) or above, and a grade 5 (C) or above in English.
  • Resident in the UK with the existing right to work in the UK and residing less than one hour from one of our port operations.
  • Prepared to work 2 weeks on 1 week off rotation, potentially away from home, for onboard assignments.
  • Commit to the full academic content of the programme including college rotations, based at Fleetwood Nautical College.
  • Have a full UK driving licence.
  • Be over 18 years old at the start of the programme.
  • Upon an offer being made you must successfully pass and ENG1 (Seafarer Medical) assessment and obtain a valid ENG1 certificate, if not already obtained.
  • Be available to start Q3 2024 (October/ November) - Exact start TBC
