ABOUT THE ROLE

Working collaboratively with a range of internal and external stakeholders, the post holder will make a substantial contribution to the ongoing development and growth of Northumbria's research activity, leading the team in proactive project management and support to academic colleagues holding large and complex research grants. The post holder will also personally manage a small portfolio of research grants.

The post holder will lead on the development of policies and processes that help expedite the mobilisation and delivery of grants, and will lead on planning and administration, financial and resource monitoring, stakeholder engagement and reporting, liaising with colleagues in Finance, Legal Services, due diligence and communications teams.

ABOUT THE TEAM

Research and Innovation Services (RIS) provides dedicated, specialist support to Northumbria's research community throughout the research grant lifecycle to help sustain Northumbria's position as a research-intensive modern university.

Support includes sourcing potential funding; aiding proposal development; providing guidance through the authorisation process; monitoring and managing project spend; and coordinating the final report and claim.

The Research Delivery Team provides financial management, guidance and support for externally funded research, consultancy and CPD projects. The team provide dedicated support for Principal Investigators (PIs) throughout the project lifetime. This includes: creating project accounts for each grant; managing the finances of projects within funder and University guidelines; providing updates on expenditure, forecasted future spending and income received; compiling claims and supporting internal and external audits. The team also liaises with Legal Services to assist with collaboration agreements and contracts for projects.

ABOUT YOU

To be successful in the role you will have:
  • In-depth knowledge of effective project management in the Higher Education or research sector
  • Excellent external facing skills and proven ability to develop and manage relationships to positive outcomes
  • Ability to work to strict deadlines and under pressure
  • Extensive experience of managing externally funded projects, including a detailed understanding of the grant lifecycle and typical challenges associated with the implementation and management of research projects
  • Proven experience of effectively managing and developing staff
  • Educated to degree level (or equivalent experience
