Your role and responsibilities  

A typical day will always involve managing the essential administrative processes, which are maintaining generic inboxes, distributing internal documents and logging correspondence. As you get more confident and understand the environment, we would expect you to work with initiative and without direct supervision to:

log evidence and track multi-stage applications update logs and manage the calendar for key works schemes distribute documents for comment and follow up, sending reminders and ensuring all comments are in on time record highway agreements and licenses for Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects (NSIPs) develop and manage databases for speed limits, rights of way, and minor works.

Some days there may be a focus on meeting management or assisting with recording payments for licences. 

On other occasions there will be scope for you to decide your paths of interest. The Highways and NSIP work is varied and interesting. You will be supported to make the most of opportunities to develop IT skills, financial management or other areas that may interest you. We will encourage you play to your strengths and develop in areas you are less confident in so that you are an asset in the Highways Team from day one. The rest is up to you

to be able to organise your time and understand how to prioritise tasks and an eye for detail good IT skills and a willingness to learn new software application to be curious and able to problem-solve, and be happy to challenge yourself to be resilient if you make mistakes – own them, learn from them and move on – we are all human.

The team  

The Suffolk County Council Highways team plays a critical role in giving technical approval for the Sizewell C highway schemes, inspecting the works during construction, monitoring project related traffic and, where identified, implementing mitigation measures. You would be primarily working for the Transport Strategy Team and working with engineers, planners, designers, project managers and wider stakeholders. Our office days are usually on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Additionally, we practice hybrid working.
