Plymouth, Plymouth, United Kingdom Plymouth City Council Full time
Apprentice Policy Officer - Role

The Policy and Intelligence Team, based within the Chief Executive's department of the Council is looking for an enthusiastic and dedicated apprentice to join the small team of Policy and Intelligence Advisors.

The work of the Policy and Intelligence Team is diverse. We offer a range of support to services right across the Council, as well as working closely with the Leader of the Council, Councillors, the Corporate Management Team and Service Directors. A large part of the Team's work is dedicated to interpreting and responding to changes in national policy and major Government announcements, developing public affairs' plans and coordinating and administering cross-cutting council projects.

Examples of the Team's day-to-day work include producing internal briefings and reports, writing letters to Government Ministers, organising agendas and the supporting material for meetings with senior civil servants or local MPs, and supporting the Council's work with partners and local and national networks.

The ideal candidate will have at least five GCSEs (or equivalent), including Maths and English, a basic working knowledge of local government, be a self-starter and demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of people. They will have experience of carrying our research and be able to demonstrate good writing and organisational skills.

As a higher apprentice, the successful candidate will be supported and have access to advice and guidance but will be working in a fast-paced environment and could be required to assist with range of activity at short notice, therefore they will be expected to use initiative and be able to prioritise tasks.

This apprenticeship will be completed with The JGA Group as the training provider and upon completion, the successful applicant will achieve a Level 4 Policy Officer apprenticeship standard. This role will include a skills assessment with the training provider as part of the recruitment process.

Plymouth City Council is an equal opportunities employer. All applicants will be considered for employment regardless of age, care experience, disability, gender reassignment, marriage/civil partnership, pregnancy/maternity, race, religion/belief, sex or sexual orientation.

As part of our commitment to promoting equality we offer guaranteed interviews to those who meet the essential criteria and are considered disabled, care experienced or are an Armed Forces Service Leaver within the last two years.

Funding & Assessments: Please be aware that if you are successful in your application you will be required to sit a functional skills assessment with the apprenticeship training provider. Your current and previous qualifications will also be checked to ensure that you are eligible for course funding.

For an informal conversation relating to this role or the apprenticeship, please contact Caroline Marr, Senior Policy Advisor –
