The Role

We are looking to recruit an innovative educator to provide expertise in teaching, learning, and administration to support the continued development of our interiors and architecture courses. The individual must provide module leadership in the Department of Architecture and work effectively with the team. The individual will report to the Course Leader of the BA (Hons) Interior Design Environment Architectures (IDEAs) course, and focus their teaching on the reinvention and reuse of existing buildings and spaces, underpinned by innovative, sustainable and ethical approaches, as well as a commitment to working with communities to shape all stages of the design process.

The successful individual will have delivered a sustained experience within interior architecture education at HE level and demonstrate creative pedagogy to support students develop, iterate, and synthesise their projects that reflect current, critical debates in the profession, the duties of the interior architect and climate literacy.

This must be underpinned by a strong understanding of construction, material, structural, environmental technologies, and user comfort, along with a clear academic agenda. Further, an innovative approach to design studio teaching is essential. This role affords the opportunity to develop and define a clear pedagogical approach to design and technology in spatial practices, as well as curriculum development and monitoring skills, working with the Course Leaders and Head of Architecture.

This role will:

  • Set creative agendas focused on spatial practices for current critical debates, whilst enhancing student's communication, representation and professional skills appropriate to the level of teaching;
  • Lead and coordinate the delivery of undergraduate design studio teaching, including lectures, seminars, and tutorials;
  • Take responsibility to ensure high-quality teaching and learning;
  • To be responsible for the integration of the ARB and RIBA professional criteria in the curriculum of our undergraduate and postgraduate courses within the architecture department;
  • Achieve and maintain learning and assessment standards that demonstrate techniques at the forefront of interiors and architecture, underpinned by the principles of climate literacy, ethical practice, and health and life safety;
  • Meet internal progression targets in accordance with institutional strategies and regulations; and
  • Support the Course Team in the administration, recruitment, and promotion of the courses within the architecture department.

Working closely with the Course Leaders of BA (Hons) Interior Design Environment Architectures and BA (Hons) Architecture courses. The candidate will deliver design studio teaching and technical skills at undergraduate level and support the teaching on postgraduate courses. Moreover, the successful candidate will participate in cross-disciplinary activities and knowledge exchange to enhance the collaborative approach at Ravensbourne.

Outside of the academic teaching weeks, the role will require the preparation of material, admissions and recruitment, coordination, citizenship, consultancy, as required by the Department of Architecture.

The Candidate

The successful candidate will have comprehensive knowledge of ARB and RIBA requirements at Parts 1, 2, and 3 in UK schools of architecture, coupled with a demonstrable professional knowledge and experience of architecture and spatial design, professional practice, and teaching.

The candidate will possess excellent organisational and communication skills and the ability to engage students directly with their chosen industry will be essential. HEA accreditation or a PGCE is desirable. Candidates without a teaching qualification will be required to achieve this within 2-years of appointment into the role.

The appointed individual will work 3-days per week in the Department of Architecture throughout the calendar year. They will be required to teach students across our professionally prescribed and validated courses, and courses without professional recognition.

Applicants must have clear knowledge and understanding of current architectural design practices and a keen interest in innovative and emerging technologies in the profession. The candidate should be familiar with working across virtual learning environments and associated teaching methodologies and develop and apply innovative teaching methods using a variety of different resources/materials, contributing to Ravensbourne's teaching within the creative disciplines.
