Oxford, Oxfordshire, United Kingdom University of Oxford Full time

The department is looking to appoint a Research Fellow (Grade 9) to undertake applied mixed methods research (such as implementation and process evaluations) in relation to our growing portfolio of programme evaluations for What Works Centres such as the Education Endowment Foundation. The Research Fellow will be located in School of Education, part of the Faculty of Health and Education, based on our Manchester campus. The faculty is a vibrant place to work with teaching and research activity in Education, Health, Psychology and Social Work / Social Care disciplines.

Building from our foundations in the internationally renowned Education and Sacial Research Institute (ESRI), research in the School of Education is world-leading with impact at local, regional, national, and global levels. Our research informs debates in education across the lifespan and contexts. Our ranking of 9 out of 83 for research power in REF 2021 reinforced our prominence as a centre for research in education in the North-West of England; 100% of our research impact in Education was rated as world-leading or internationally excellent. We placed in the top 150 in the 2023 QS rankings. Our highly impactful research includes early childhood education, critical policy studies in education, EDI, mathematics education, pedagogical innovation, post-developmental childhood studies, and community-based learning.

Our researchers work in innovative ways to support young people and to develop ways of working in schools and communities to create transformational change. We encourage work that is theoretically grounded, methodologically innovative, and deeply impactful. The research fellow will have an opportunity to develop a portfolio of work that contributes to developing and understanding the relationship between theory and practice in education.

This represents an outstanding opportunity to lead the development of programme evaluations. The postholder will make a substantial contribution to securing funding and be responsible for the design, management and analysis of implementation and process evaluations. This role includes developing new study designs, leading ethics submissions and contributing to documents to ensure that GDPR requirements are met such as data sharing agreements, writing protocols, fieldwork, quantitative and qualitative data analysis, reporting and publication of findings. The work will require collaboration with internal and external partners and strong project management and good communication skills.

About the candidate:

We are looking for an enthusiastic and proactive researcher who has expert knowledge of education and current issues faced by young people. The successful candidate will be able to collect and collate data and other research outcomes, analyse and evaluate findings and disseminate these to the relevant groups and research communities. Experience of working on programme evaluation (including randomised field trials) is highly desirable.

The successful candidate will organise and manage the day-to-day progress of programme evaluations. They will be proactive in identifying future research and income generating activity in the field and will be confident in leading bid writing that meets the needs of funders. They will demonstrate a track record in project management and have an interest in evidence-based interventions in the social sciences.

To apply:

If you would like to apply, please take the time to consider the essential criteria in the job description and provide us with a CV that demonstrates your suitability for the role.

For an informal discussion regarding the requirements of the roles please contact Professor Cathy Lewin, to arrange a MS Teams call.
