At Oakhill Secure Training Centre we look after young people aged 12 to 18 years old who have been remanded or sentenced to periods of detention. The vulnerable young people in our care can be challenging with a wide range of social and emotional complex needs. This is an environment that calls for high standards of social care and service delivery to provide a secure and stable environment for young people to develop their life skills and address the behaviours that have led them into custody.

Oakhill Secure Training Centre works closely with the Youth Custody Services to ensure that its regimes and designs reflect best practice in residential care to prevent offending.

The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting the daily management system of security intelligence, maintaining a robust knowledge of issues relating to the safety of the Centre.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coach, support and develop staff, including supervision, to maximise their performance and ensure high standards of care, values, ethical standards, equality and diversity, policies and procedures, legislation and contractual and inspection framework requirements are met.
  • Form trusting, respectful and professional relationships with children / young people, in order that they respond and react appropriately to information and guidance.
  • Manage a positive risk culture in order to promote inclusion, integration and to minimise the risk of incidents occurring.
  • All staff employed by G4S have the responsibility for their own Health & Safety and to their colleagues in order to assist G4S in its obligation to achieve British Safety Council Requirements at all times.
  • Ensure all relevant paperwork is completed to a high standard, within required timescales and communicated effectively, in order to comply with the Contract and Company Policies and Procedures.
  • Ensure all emergency and planned mobility risk assessments and relevant paperwork are completed in a timely manner.
  • Complete and action all Security Information Report (SIRs)s, ensuring were appropriate information is shared with other departments in order to maintain safety and stability within Oakhill STC
  • Ensure integrity and confidentiality when dealing with sensitive information and intelligence you may be privy to in the department.
  • Deliver Security Training to the ITC and refresher training, and ensure the training packages are kept up to date and relevant.
  • Be fully conversant with the Local Security Strategy (LSS) procedures and processes
  • Ensure that all tools and equipment in each department are listed on an inventory, and advise all departments around the Governance of tools and equipment.
  • Ensure all end of month KPI figures are submitted to the Audit and compliance department by the 1st of each month.
  • Manage and oversee searching of bedrooms, to ensure that the Residential team have support with intelligence led bedroom searching
  • Deliver at the Care Team meeting any significant trends or enquire with staff at that meeting around any knowledge gaps within the Security Intel picture.
  • Support your link residential units and the Resettlement Team with any information and where possible attendance at meetings, such as ROTL. Parole, ESTs this list is not exhaustive (handover must be sent if you are unable to attend), with any intelligence picture of specific children being discussed.
  • Ensure you are fully conversant with all the children residing on your security link unit.
  • Ensure all evidence is correctly packaged, recorded and stored
  • Deliver monthly desk top exercises of Contingency Plans, for the plans to be reviewed
  • Check daily that all court paperwork and Serco risk assessments have been completed and available 48 hours prior to their court appearance
  • Wherever possible, when on duty, be part of any external escort, and supervise Social Visits
  • Proactively plan each shift, including activities and visits, in order to positively manage young people's behaviour.
  • Manage incidents as and when necessary and ensure support of the Educational and Activity programmes at the Centre
  • Liaise effectively and professionally with internal and external agencies, parents and carers, in order to maximise partnership working and positive outcomes for young people.
  • Support the senior management team in the implementation of development strategies promoting a positive approach to ensure the change process is embraced.
  • Assist in the promotion of creating a positive Health & Safety culture across the site leading by example, this includes reporting accidents and near misses in a timely manner & follow the applicable safe systems of work for the role.

The Ideal Candidate:

Essential Skills:

  • Previous secure residential experience within child-care
  • Comprehensive knowledge of security & contingency procedures
  • Good understanding of how the operational contract works
  • Exceptional record keeping ability
  • Completion or willingness to complete level 3 award in management

Desirable Skills

  • Experience of monitoring service delivery and meeting short term objectives
  • Holder of relevant Security analysis qualification or willingness to work towards
