Nature and Scope:
The RFU has embarked on a strategic plan which has data-driven decisions at its centre.

By developing deeper understanding of players, volunteers and fans, the RFU hopes to create sustained and transformational change for Rugby Union in England.

We are recruiting for a Senior Insights Manager to help deliver our transformation projects and drive business performance.

We are particularly interested in candidates with a background in data analysis, who would also be comfortable leading a team which included researchers as well.

Who will you be working with?


You will be part of the Strategy, Transformation, & Insights team, working flexibly with different colleagues within that team to design & execute projects.

We work with all the different divisions of the RFU (from Commercial, to Rugby Development, to Business Operations, and more) to help deliver the RFU's strategy.


The team you're joining have a mix of practical & sector experience: from broadcast to ticketing, to fan engagement & participation, and from data science and visualization to market research & branding.

What will you be doing?

Some key responsibilities include:

Drive business performance:

  • Use data to influence Executive and Leadership team decisions on business strategy and tactics.
  • Evolve our business intelligence programme by developing more data visualisers and driving unique dashboard viewers across departments.
  • Collaborate closely with RFU strategy managers to design and implement change programmes
  • Shape and plan future data & insights activity:
  • Drive our roadmap of insights projects, leveraging opportunities to listen to fans, players, volunteers and employees.
  • Accelerate collaborative activity between insights, analytics and partnership intelligence teams across the business.
  • Own the Insights Team business planning process (budgeting) each year.
  • Develop the capabilities of Insights Analysts and Managers through a team leadership role and line management responsibilities.
  • Scan the horizon for opportunities and threats to the RFU and identify research requirements to launch them.
  • Maintain brilliant relationships with our suppliers and network to bring in information and resources to the RFU.
  • Deliver original research and analysis:
  • Develop plans to address gaps in our organizational knowledge.
  • Manage the execution of a portfolio of mixedmethod projects (across research and firstparty data analysis, in particular).
  • Get handson where needed to deliver work to a high standard.
  • Own supplier relationships and take a strategic approach to our roster.
  • Embed the findings and actions from our insights into the business, effecting change

Essential:

Technical skills:

  • Good understanding of relational databases and SQL.
  • Strong experience in developing content for data visualisation tools such as PowerBi or Looker but preferably with Tableau.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data, identify trends and communicate this to colleagues at all levels.
  • Clear on research best practice across surveys, focus groups, and online communities.

Management skills:

  • Project management skills and experience.
  • Proven developer of both direct and indirect reports.
  • Highly selfmotivated and able to work under their own direction to achieve stated objectives within the necessary timescales and demonstrate a determination to follow through tasks or projects to completion.
  • Clear and engaging communicator, able to adapt styles to audience needs.
  • Inspiring leader, able to influence teams across the business in order to deliver strategic outcomes.
  • Experience in managing supplier contracts & delivering against briefs

Desired:

  • Interest in growing your understanding of research to complement their technical knowledge with first party data.
  • Knowledge of ticketing or venue businesses.
  • Experience with descriptive and predictive analytics through Alteryx.
  • Experience of Monitoring and Evaluation for highvalue projects.
  • Excellence with research tools such as Alchemer and Recollective, competence with BI tools such as Tableau and SharePoint.
