Job Introduction

We are recruiting for an experienced Paralegal to join our small, friendly Competition and Regulatory Law team. This is a twelve month fixed term contract role, running to early June 2025 and is based in London. The team has a hybrid work pattern with two days in the office and three working from home.

The Competition and Regulatory Law team work closely with the BBC's Policy and Strategy teams, the BBC's content division (for example BBC Sport), as well as the BBC's commercial arm BBC Studios. We provide advice on general competition law, subsidy control and broadcast regulatory and compliance matters, as well as advising on the BBC's regulatory framework under the Royal Charter and Framework Agreement.

The BBC Legal Division is responsible for providing legal advice to the BBC and for developing and implementing the BBC's legal strategy. The BBC Legal Division is led by the BBC's General Counsel and provides legal assistance & advice across the BBC. It is made up of the following departments: General Counsel's Office, Information Rights, Intellectual Property, Employment , Litigation, Programme Legal Advice, Commercial, Design and Engineering and Competition & Regulatory Law.

Our overall structure is similar to that found in private practice firms and we support on a wide range of diverse matters. Whilst this means the work can be challenging and relatively fast-paced at times, we are open to discussing agile ways of working to support our staff, where appropriate and in line with our flexible and hybrid working policies.

Main Responsibilities

As a Paralegal in the Competition and Regulatory Law team you will provide high quality paralegal support to the lawyers in the team. We're looking for someone who's organised and enthusiastic in their approach to providing paralegal support. The role will involve support on complex projects in terms of file management, tracking workstreams and legal research. Experience of working in a competition agency, regulated sectors and/or the media would be helpful but not essential.

You will undertake legal research and provide assistance with a range of legal areas covered by the Competition and Regulatory Law team including -
  • Competition law including regulation of anti-competitive conduct and merger control.
  • Application of the BBC's Royal Charter and Framework Agreement particularly the elements regulating the BBC's market impact
  • Case and project management
  • Supporting training and knowledge management activities, including maintaining currency of legal knowledge and sharing awareness of relevant legal and policy developments
  • Working collaboratively with colleagues in the Competition and Regulatory Law Team and across the BBC.
Are you the right candidate?

To be successful in this role, you will need:
  • Relevant Paralegal experience ideally gained in a regulated sector (such as media, telecoms or utilities), or working for a regulatory or public authority (such as the Competition and Markets Authority or Ofcom)
  • Experience of assisting with case management on major legal projects.
  • Research skills, experience and know how.
  • A degree in law (or postgraduate diploma in law) or be a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (FCILEX).
  • A good understanding of the English legal system and knowledge of regulatory/public/ administrative law.
  • Proven ability to conduct legal research thoroughly, quickly and accurately and to communicate clearly the products of research, orally and in writing.
  • Well organised on tracking workflows
  • Attention to detail on deadlines
  • Enjoys working on fast moving matters
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to investigate complex factual issues with non-lawyers

Package Description

Band: B
Contract type: Twelve month fixed-term contract
Location: London based role with some flexibility - i.e. hybrid working
Salary: £30,000 to £35,000pa (plus London Weighting £5,164pa), depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.
