Role Summary

The Assistant Professor in Teacher Education: Modern Languages will lead the curriculum design of the Modern Languages specialism, deliver subject specialist teaching, assessment and support to ITE students within the secondary initial teacher education programme (PGCE (QTS)) at the University of Birmingham.

We are looking for an expert modern languages' teacher and teacher educator with demonstrable competencies in French, Spanish and German and a strong academic background to provide subject-specific pedagogical input to the programme. The postholder will have a passion for languages teaching in schools and be able to enthuse, engage and inspire trainee teachers to generate this in their pupils. The postholder will need expertise and experience in teacher education and development, ideally working with trainee or early career teachers.

The postholder will contribute to aspects of wider ITE programmes, for example Professional Enquiry activities and recruitment activity, working collaboratively with other subject specialist tutors.

An important part of the role will be supporting trainees on placements and managing relationships with expert colleagues and partnership schools. This will include quality assurance, mentor development and assessment of trainees against the Teacher Standards.

Person Specification

  • Typically, a higher degree relevant to the teaching area (usually PhD) or equivalent qualification, or near completion.
  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
  • Significant, recent teaching experience in a secondary school or on a programme of Initial Teacher Education.
  • Demonstrable experience in coaching/ mentoring in Initial Teacher Education and/or developing the practice of early career teachers.
  • Research or teaching experience and scholarship within the subject specialism.
  • A high level of initiative is required along with the capacity to work independently.
  • Highly developed communication skills to deal with a wide range of contacts, both internally and externally, and at all levels from school pupils to school leaders and academic colleagues.

Teaching

  • Ability to design, deliver, assess and revise teaching programmes.
  • Extensive experience and demonstrated success in developing appropriate approaches to learning and teaching and advising colleagues.
  • Experience and achievement in knowledge transfer, enterprise and similar activity that enhances the student experience or employability.

Management Administration

  • Ability to contribute to School/Departmental management processes.
  • Ability to assess and organise resources effectively.
  • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes.
  • Experience of championing Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in own work area.
  • Ability to monitor and evaluate the extent to which equality and diversity legislation, policies, procedures are applied.
  • Ability to identify issues with the potential to impact on protected groups and take appropriate action.
