Addlestone, Surrey, United Kingdom Animal and Plant Health Agency Full time

APHA scientific activity focuses on protecting the UK against the threat of a wide variety of animal and zoonotic diseases. Research undertaken at APHA include fundamental, applied and translational R&D in addition to surveillance and diagnostics. These provide scientific evidence that allows the Agency to provide expert advice and supports policy development for the UK Government and International bodies.

We are looking for a Senior Virologist to join the Viral Zoonoses Workgroup within the Virology Department. This senior scientific role will involve leading a multi-disciplinary team delivering research and surveillance for Coronaviruses including SARS-CoV-2 in animals (wildlife, livestock and companion animals), taking responsibility for studies on pathogen detection, characterisation and disease pathogenesis including susceptibility and viral transmission at the animal-human interface. The APHA is part of the UK International Coronavirus Network and currently funded research includes host tropism and response investigations across different species. A clear personal drive and enthusiasm to investigate viral (and host) factors including implementing novel in vitro (cells), ex vivo (organoids) and possibly in vivo approaches. The utilisation of diagnostic tools also features in the research remit where confirmatory testing is required for animals with suspected disease including the genetic and phenotypic characterisation of field and experimental virus isolates. Safe and responsible practices with infectious viral pathogens are reflected in the critical importance of competently working in containment facilities.

The role will involve team working both within the immediate Virology Research Team and with other colleagues, including National Wildlife Management team, and the Pathology and Animal Sciences Department within bio-containment level 2 and 3 laboratories. The role will include working alongside and contributing to National Reference Laboratory functions within the Workgroup. Clear scientific and matrix management communications are another key attribute for both internal engagement and with external national and international collaborators. You will form collaborations with external partners, lead project reports, contribute to grant applications, peer-reviewed publications and presentations at national and international meetings.

APHA Virology is a multi-disciplinary department with globally recognised expertise on a wide range of viruses, including Coronaviruses. The programme of work on emerging zoonotic diseases is expanding at APHA and has strong national and international dimensions, seeking to apply better solutions for hazard characterisation, threat detection, mitigation and control, and risk management to protect UK and global biosecurity.

In return for your dedication, we will support your ongoing scientific and personal development through appropriate training. You will also enjoy excellent Civil Service benefits including pension.

Closing date: Apply before 11:55 pm on Monday 13 May 2024.
