The Slade School of Fine Art is an art school where staff and students approach contemporary art practice, and the history and theories that inform it through experimentation, imagination and research-oriented practice.

About the role

We are recruiting a practicing artist for an academic position, working broadly in the field of painting. The post holder will be based in the Graduate Painting Area, while also working with students from across all programmes and subject areas of the school.

Teaching responsibilities will include tutorial responsibility for a group of students; studio and workshop teaching in one-to-one and group situations with students from all three studio subject areas, and participation in the lively programme of tutorials, seminars and group crits.

About you

The successful candidate will be a practising artist engaged in the practices and discourses of painting, contemporary art debates and the wider cultural context. Alongside this, the candidate will demonstrate an active engagement in debates concerning non-canonical approaches to art practice, the decolonisation of thought and art practice, and diversity within contemporary art. The candidate will also have a significant research profile with the ability to product outputs of suitable quality for submission to the Research Excellence Framework (REF).

The candidate will have experience teaching in Higher Education and have an understanding of the relationship between studio practice and its interface with technical processes, such as specialist material knowledge within a field of Painting. The candidate will evidence research and practice that questions canonical conventions of Fine Art, informing innovative pedagogical and curriculum development.

The candidate will demonstrate good interpersonal skills with colleagues across all levels and the ability to work enthusiastically and confidently with students and colleagues, including group teaching and critiques, individual tutorials and hands-on practical workshops, encouraging curiosity, exploration and risk taking.
