Role Outline

Boston University Study Abroad London is seeking a Graduate Assistant for the English History and Literature Programme for American study abroad students.

The position starts in September and concludes in late December 2024. The role entails an average of 20 hours of work per week, primarily on Wednesdays and Thursdays, though some flexibility is required. It is anticipated that more hours will be needed in September and October, with fewer hours required in November and December.

The Graduate Assistant must also attend field trips, including visits to Haworth and the Lake District (likely on the third weekend in September) and Liverpool (probably at the beginning of October), as well as occasional field trips in London, Oxford and Stratford-upon-Avon.

Final exam coverage for the course is scheduled for mid-December 2024

Research Seminars

The Literature Research Seminar aims to give an informed sense of the interpretation and evaluation of literary texts. Literary texts in question will involve examples of novels, poetry and drama from the 16th century to the Modern period, also including contemporary English Literatures. The History Research Seminar covers English History across the modern period, with a focus on research methods and accessing archival sources in London.

Job Description

Duties include:

  • Attend both Literature and History Research Seminars (EN 391 and HI432) and assist professors with courses as required
  • Attend occasional Core course sessions for HI246 and EN340
  • Organise field trips in London, and supervise students joining and visiting the London Library and the British Library
  • Accompany and lead students on London field trips
  • Accompany and lead students on field trips to Haworth/Lake District; Liverpool; and Oxford
  • Supervise up to four student Literature or History student research projects
  • Advise students on coursework for HI246 and EN340
  • Hold office hours for and be available to advise on research/writing skills for students
  • Liaise between BU London office and students
  • Occasional office duties

Required Skills

The successful candidate will hold a minimum of a Master's degree, and/or be working towards or have recently completed a PhD, in either English Literature or History. Candidates will ideally have experience of studying both English Literature and History at undergraduate level or beyond. Candidates must have experience of working with and teaching American students, possibly in American universities, and must possess strong cross-cultural, mentoring and communication skills. Applicants must have the legal status to work full-time in the UK.
