Postdoctoral Research Associate/Fellow

Exeter, Devon, United Kingdom University of Exeter Full time

This new full time post is available from 15 August 2024 on a fixed term basis until 15 February 2026.

The post

The Faculty wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Associate or Fellow to support the work of Drs Jean-Francois Mercure and Femke Nijsse on both the Economics of Energy Innovation and System Transition (EEIST) and the Leverhulme Centre on Climate Change Mitigation (LC3M).

The EEIST project ) is led by the University of Exeter and aims to improve energy innovation and economy models used by governments for decision-making in different countries. The E3ME-FTT model will be developed and improved to answer new policy questions around energy, climate change and sustainability, in co-production with stakeholders abroad.

The LC3M is based in Sheffield and studies climate change mitigation through enhanced weathering to capture CO2 emissions and sequestrate those through natural processes. Here, the project seeks to make use of the E3ME-FTT model to explore economic dynamics and constraints around negative emissions, technological change and the deployment of enhanced weathering in national and global decarbonisation scenarios.

The successful applicant will learn and develop skills to improve and expand the E3ME-FTT model according to needs in the above projects. The person will integrate a community of over 30 modellers working with the model based in a number of institutions including Exeter, Cambridge Econometrics and the World Bank. The person may also contribute to other ongoing projects, help with fundraising and actively contribute to developing the skills of other researchers through the community. Expanding the work to address modelling needs in the financial services will also be considered.

The post will include model development, writing reports for stakeholders, writing publishing academic papers, presenting at conferences, meeting and engaging with government officials and writing grant proposals. The post is initially for 18 months but could be extended subject to the availability for further funding.

About you

The successful applicant will have abilities to operate and develop large, data-intensive and dynamical models representing human and/or physical/natural systems, ideally with some understanding of energy systems, technological change and economic dynamics. Good mathematical and programming skills are essential, as well as experience in data management and statistical analysis. The candidate will have experience with non-linear dynamical systems simulations.

The successful applicant will also be able to define research objectives, projects and proposals, identify sources of research funding and contribute to the process of securing funds, make presentations at conferences and write academic papers.

Applicants will possess a relevant PhD (or be nearing completion for Associate) or possess an equivalent qualification/experience in a related field of study such as physics, economics, ecology, applied mathematics engineering or other related quantitative fields of study. The candidate will demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within established research programmes. Applicants will be able to communicate, work collaboratively, supervise the work of others and act as team leader as required.

Please ensure you read the Job Description and Person Specification for full details of this role.

Further information

For further information please contact Dr Jean-Francois Mercure ) and Dr Femke Nijsse ).

Interviews are expected to take place early August.

The starting salary for Associate will be from £32,982 on Grade E. For Fellow it will be from £41,732 on Grade F, depending on qualifications and experience.
