Oxford, Oxfordshire, United Kingdom Novo Nordisk Full time

Are you passionate about seeking ways to change the lives for patients living with diabetes, or other cardiometabolic diseases? Do you want to join a department with a mission to develop cutting edge human centric in vitro phenotypic assays and apply state-of-the-art functional genomics and screening technologies to discover and validate novel therapeutic targets? Do you have a proven track record of leading innovative research projects? Then perhaps this position is your next opportunity to be challenged

The Position

NovoNordisk Research Centre Oxford (NNRCO) is seeking a highly qualified and innovative Principal Scientist to join the Department of Discovery Biology and Pharmacology, for a role developing and applying cutting edge human centric in vitro and in silico approaches to drive target identification for cardiometabolic diseases. In this role, you will be working with, and leading cross-functional local and global teams of researchers to advance and explore the understanding of disease mechanisms to identify and develop novel therapeutic strategies. You will also be expected to champion identified targets towards development of new pharmacological therapies. Your key responsibilities in this role will be to:

  • Design, develop and validate novel human centric phenotypic assays for large-scale arrayed siRNA, CRISPR, peptide or small molecule screens to identify novel targets involved in the pathogenesis and progression of cardiometabolic diseases.
  • Work collaboratively and hands on with scientists and colleagues in our research laboratories at NNRCO, and lead matrix teams of cross-disciplinary scientists to optimise, miniaturize, automate, and statistically validate large scale phenotypic screens and/or functional genomics experimental approaches.
  • Analyse multimodal large scale data sets and interpret results to identify and validate drug targets as well as document and maintain records of experimental work in the electronic lab notebook and train new users.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional local and global teams within NNRCO and wider Novo Nordisk organisation, including therapy area specialists, bioinformatics, medicinal chemistry, pharmacology, safety, and early clinical development, to advance drug discovery projects.
  • Act as manager and mentor to junior scientists.
  • Develop new collaboration with external academic groups and biotech companies to help advance science and technology at NNRCO and publish scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals and present research findings at scientific conferences.

Qualifications

You'll be a successful candidate if you have a strong background in cell and molecular biology applied to relevant cardiovascular and/or metabolic disease context. Previous experience working for biotech or pharmaceutical industry is desired.

Additionally, you should:

  • Hold a PhD in a relevant field (e.g., pharmacology, biochemistry, or related field).
  • Have at least 7+ years of independent and innovative research, where experience from working at or with biotech or the pharmaceutical industry with a focus on target identification for cardiometabolic diseases is desired.
  • Have experience in designing and executing in vitro experiments, including the application automation and high-throughput methodologies, and a strong understanding of disease mechanisms and therapeutic strategies for cardiometabolic diseases.
  • Have experience managing a team of researchers, including setting objectives, monitoring performance, and providing feedback.
  • Possess excellent written and oral communication skills, with a track record of publishing papers in high-impact journals and presenting research findings at scientific conferences

This is an excellent opportunity to join a diverse and dynamic team of innovative scientists working at a state-of-the-art research laboratory situated in the heart of University of Oxford's medical campus.

About the Department

The Department of Discovery Biology and Pharmacology establishes and applies state-of-the-art human centric in vitro assays for functional genomics and unbiased large-scale phenotypic screening. Ultimately, our aim is to discover novels targets and characterise key biological pathways that can lead to development of new disruptive therapeutic treatments.

The department is led by Carina Ämmälä, and consists of specialists, staff scientists and post-doctoral scientists. We are a dedicated, collaborative team, working with a variety of in vitro cell types and phenotypic responses relevant across a spectrum of cardiometabolic diseases. Together we develop and miniaturize human centric in vitro assays for use in unbiased pooled genome wide or arrayed high-throughput screens. We capture the phenotypic responses and integrate the data with transcriptomics, proteomics, peptidomics, and use statistical modelling to create biological insight and to identify novel targets and pathways. Together, we share a passion for translational research and a desire to discover novel targets for development of innovative therapeutics to improve the lives of patients.

Working at Novo Nordisk

At Novo Nordisk, we don't wait for change. We drive it. We're a dynamic company in an even more dynamic industry, and we know that what got us to where we are today is not necessarily what will make us successful in the future. We embrace the spirit of experimentation, striving for excellence without fixating on perfection. We never shy away from opportunities to develop, we seize them. From research and development, through to manufacturing, marketing, and sales - we're all working to move the needle on patient care.
