THE POST OF CLINICAL FELLOW IN ADVANCED ADULT ECHOCARDIOGRAPHY



Applications are now open for a clinical fellowship in advanced adult echocardiography located at Wythenshawe Hospital, with a duration of at least 12 months commencing from July/August 2024. The selected candidate will assume a senior cardiology trainee role in this specialized center, covering various cardiology services such as cardiac surgery, thoracic surgery, heart/lung transplantation, Ventricular assist devices, and ECMO. The fellow will receive extensive training in stress echo and TOE in preparation for the BSE accreditation exams. Additionally, exposure to Mitraclips, PFO closures, and TAVI procedures will be provided, offering an opportunity to learn advanced 3D TOE for structural intervention. The role encompasses tertiary cardiology on-calls, which involve supporting primary PCI and handling regional referrals for EP, advanced heart failure, valve disease, and endocarditis services. Wythenshawe also hosts a satellite ACHD service, allowing for exposure through outpatient clinics. If interested in training in cardiac MR or CT, there is an option to extend the fellowship duration to 2 years.


  • Main duties of the job:
  • Comprehensive training in echocardiography with a focus on stress-echocardiography and 3D TOE.
  • Performing stress lists, TOE lists, TTE lists, cardiology clinics, and attending MDTs.
  • Supervising and supporting junior doctors, physiologists, and specialist nurses.
  • Providing in-patient care for cardiology patients under the imaging consultants' guidance.
  • Participating in general on-call responsibilities for cardiology middle grades, including supporting the primary PCI service and managing cardiology in-patients.
  • Developing competency in basic cath lab invasive procedures.

Person Specification


Essential

  • GMC registration - full
  • MRCP or FRCR or equivalent qualification
  • Completion of basic training in medicine
  • Experience in Cardiology as a middle grade
  • Interest in pursuing a career in Cardiology
  • BSE (or equivalent) transthoracic Echo accreditation
  • Experience in TOE and stress echo
  • Participation in Clinical Audit
  • Strong organization and communication skills
  • Effective team working abilities

Desirable

  • Experience in teaching Medical Students
  • Teaching Junior medical staff
  • Publication in Medical Journals
  • Research exposure related to Cardiology and/or BCS or similar scientific bodies
