London, Greater London, United Kingdom UCL Full time

About us

The Department of Political Science at UCL is a leading international centre for political research. It offers a uniquely stimulating environment for the study of all major fields of politics, as well as public management and public policy.

More details about the Department of Political Science and UCL can be found at below and at and

The POLMEM project (Sept 2023 – Aug 2026) investigates how (dominant) social groups' narratives about their past evolve over time and when and how the actions of memory entrepreneurs shape them. To study these questions, it collects revision histories of Wikipedia articles on historic figures, places and events; creates a dataset on which memory entrepreneurs intervened when and how in the formation of a set of collective memories in the UK, Poland and Germany; and leverages recent advances in natural language processing and causal inference methods.

Its aim is to develop a new integrated theoretical and measurement framework that improves our understanding of the substantive content of collective memories and what shapes them.

About the role

UCL Department of Political Science and School of Public Policy is seeking to hire a Research Assistant (pre-doc, 80% FTE). The position is available from mid-September 2024 for a duration of 11.5 months.

The post is part of The Politics of Memory (POLMEM) an ESRC (Economic and Social Research Council)-funded research project led by Dr Judith Spirig.

The position involves a variety of tasks that provide excellent preparation for a PhD programme or work in data science. The Research Assistant will be responsible for the collection, organisation, pre-processing, and storing of large volumes of Wikipedia data, and other related tasks.

The Research Assistant will work closely with Dr Judith Spirig and other members of the team.

About you

The ideal candidate will have a Master's Degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Computational Social Science or related subjects (e.g., political science or economics with a data science focus), or be about to obtain one, and is interested in pursuing an academic career. Exceptional candidates with a Bachelor's degree will also be considered.

The Research Assistant should have excellent knowledge of relevant programming languages (most importantly R and python), data scraping, databases, data management, big data analysis, natural language processing, and have an interest in the social processes of memory, the measurement of narrative change, and/or Wikipedia.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong communication skills (both oral and written), team-working skills, self-direction and the capacity for independent work.

Applicants should provide a Curriculum Vitae, a 1 page application/cover letter and the details of two referees who can be approached at the interview stage.
