Are you an experienced business professional working in the telecoms field looking for a new and exciting opportunity?
We are looking for a suitably qualified individual to take on the role of Standardisation Director for the UK Federated Telecoms Hubs (FTHs) to manage and develop the future telecoms standardisation strategy for the three new telecoms hubs, TITAN, HASC and CHEDDAR and the Joint Open Infrastructure for Networks Research (JOINER) to ensure a growing impact of UK technologies in major telecoms standards. The mission of the FTH is to provide decision makers in partner universities, Government the UK Telecoms Innovation Network (UKTIN) with the tools, directions and insight necessary to understand, develop and embark on effective pathways to place UK intellectual property in international telecoms standards. The FTH is the overarching initiative under which a number of whole UK telecoms standardisation initiatives sit.
This role will be based in the Engineering Department's LiFi Research and Development Centre (LRDC) which is housed in the Electrical Engineering Division in West Cambridge. Reporting to the TITAN Director you will be responsible for developing and delivering the strategy approved by the TITAN Director and, as the leader of a multi-disciplinary team, you will be responsible for developing the potential, performance and wellbeing of the four academic and academic-related professionals in the team. The successful candidate will be required to ensure that key strategic and business relationships in and beyond the University are maintained and nurtured, generating increased impact and financial sustainability for FTHs. Additionally, you will be responsible for maintaining strategic links with the Department of Science, Innovation and Technologies (DSIT) and will advise Government on telecoms standard related issues.
You will have direct responsibility for developing strong, high-impact and high-income relationships with major industrial partners, for developing major new projects and service offers, for setting overall standards for major parts of FTHs' services, and for building effective high-level international networks to inform and promote FTHs' international engagements in Standards Development Organisations (FDOs). This activity may involve the successful candidate in taking a high-profile delivery role, for example by presenting substantive content, facilitating dialogue between groups of senior leaders, and analysing and preparing reports of the findings.
The successful candidate will be educated to degree level and ideally hold a PhD in engineering. You will have experience of leading a high impact research programme in academia or another major organisation, operating at an executive level, with a proven track record of strategic planning, business development, high value partnerships, financial management and team leadership. You will possess excellent technical knowledge across a broad range of areas related to telecoms, particularly standardisation, economics and innovation and have an in-depth awareness of the academic and industry context within which FTHs operate. The successful candidate will require excellent written and oral communication skills, good interpersonal skills and diplomacy, and be able to demonstrate qualities of leadership suited both to an academic and an entrepreneurial, commercially orientated organisation.
