The University of St Andrews invites applications for an Associate Lectureship (Education Focussed) in Ethics, within the Department of Philosophy at the School of Philosophical, Anthropological and Film Studies.

The position will have a fixed-term contract for 12 months, commencing on 2nd September 2024. The post is intended to provide additional teaching support to the department during a period of high student numbers and it will not be renewed.

We are seeking teaching expertise in ethics broadly construed. In particular:

  • Ability to teach 'Reasons for Action and Belief', an advanced undergraduate module covering the nature of reasons and their relations to what we ought to do and believe, from the perspectives of moral philosophy and of epistemology.
  • Ability to deliver lectures for introductory undergraduate modules in moral philosophy, including a selection of the following topics: the objectivity of moral values; the role of disagreement in morality; the relativity of moral judgment; the presence or absence of principles in the moral domain; the possibility of moral knowledge; moral luck; moral problems such as global poverty and our obligations to non-human animals.
  • Ability to deliver tutorials (small-group classes for first- and second-year undergraduates) for a range of introductory modules in moral philosophy broadly construed.

There may, however, be some variation in the details of this, depending on the expertise of the person appointed for the position.
