London, Greater London, United Kingdom Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London Full time

Job description

The Courtauld works to advance how we see and understand the visual arts, as an internationally renowned centre for the teaching, research of art history and a major public gallery. The Courtauld is a small specialist university and home to the largest community of art historians and conservators in the UK. The Courtauld offers a range of degree programmes from BA to PhD in the History of Art, curating and the conservation of easel and wall paintings. The Courtauld is one of the leading centres in the world for education and research in conservation. We run three year MAs in the conservation of Easel paintings (18 students) and Wall paintings (6-12 students) and a 12-month MA in Buddhist Art History and Conservation (8-10 students, joint with the History of Art department).

The Role:

Reporting to the Head of Conservation, this rewarding and varied role is an opportunity to develop as a wall paintings conservator by building your experience of teaching, mentoring and supervising conservators at the very beginning of their careers. You will prepare and deliver laboratory-based practical teaching and studio supervision of first year MA Conservation of Wall paintings students at The Courtauld. These classes are designed to familiarise students with wall painting materials and technology, introduce conservation materials, and build confidence with practical work and documentation. Your patience and empathy when dealing with students will help them to increase their confidence and competence.

These classes are complementary to theory-based seminars delivered by other members of the faculty, and close collaboration and good communication with colleagues will be needed to ensure smooth delivery of the programme. This work will primarily be based at Somerset House for 1.5 to 2 days per week, with home working possible for the remainder.

You will:

  • Have a recognised qualification in wall paintings conservation
  • Have a good knowledge of photography, wall paintings binders, aggregates and pigments, and conservation materials, as well as applicable health and safety.
  • Be a good communicator and team player
  • Be patient, conscientious and able to demonstrate empathy and understanding, particularly when dealing with student issues
