Job Purpose

As the Data Engineer, working with the Data Engineering Lead you will be responsible for delivering our strategy to establish our data assets within the Azure cloud platform. You will be maintaining and improving existing data pipelines as well as creating new Azure data pipelines. You will be accountable for implementing GSK best practice working with above country teams to ensure the UK Commercial Azure space follows compliance guidelines.

With an aptitude for data you will show curiosity to understand where data is sourced, how it is processed and how it can be used by the business. You will be able to advise on suitability, strengths, and weaknesses of data for various business purposes and will use this knowledge to build robust data pipelines. These pipelines will need to transform the data from its raw form into processed data with defined business rules that are suitable for both reporting and use by the Data Science team. Strategic thinking is critical when designing data pipelines so that minimum change will be required in the future. You will need to work with both the UK Reporting Manager and above-country reporting leads to ensure consistent calculation of KPIs and metrics. You will be required to analyse implications of changes or errors to data/data provision and advise the business accordingly.

You will need to think strategically with regards to what data and metrics may be required both now and in the future. Our aim is to have automated processes that use configuration to minimise interventions required by the Data Engineering team and allow the Reporting team to build Power BI reports.

To be successful you will need to work in close partnership with the wider Business Insight team to ensure you understand the data needs of the organisation and contribute to delivering the plan to meet these.

Key responsibilities:

  • Advising in your capacity as a UK Commercial data expert
  • Ingesting new data sources (either developing local pipelines or liaising with Global team)
  • Ensuring UK LOC Azure environment is compliant with GSK standards and policies
  • Create Azure Data Factory pipelines and Databricks notebooks to manipulate and transform data in Azure Data Lake Storage
  • Provide quality assurance of outputs vs. source/legacy systems
  • Work with Power BI report developers to understand requirements and build appropriate resources in Azure Databricks
  • Ensure all Databricks notebooks are maintained using version control in GitHub Enterprise
  • Develop and update technical documentation

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science or a related field (e.g., STEM), or other significant relevant experience
  • Able to write advanced SQL queries
  • Strong Python coding skills
  • Experience in using:
  • Azure Data Factory
  • Azure Databricks
  • Databricks Delta Lake
  • GitHub Enterprise
  • Azure Key Vault
  • Sound understanding of relational database design principles
  • Experience developing data models to support report development
  • Possess strong analytical skills and excellent attention to detail
  • Excellent English communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, managers and stakeholders across varying levels of seniority, some of whom may be based outside of the UK

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience using pharmaceutical commercial data (e.g., Veeva, IQVIA)
