Supervises: Climbing Wall Team: Assistants. Trainees. Themselves.

Position Commences: 1/03/2024 or earlier Salary range: £23,000 rising to £26,000

Contracted hours: 40 per week, variable Annual leave: 28 days

Background

Ambleside Climbing Wall was opened in December 2010. It is a unique facility located above a shop with in the town centre. The facility is compact, and comprises of a 3m high boulder room and a 10.5m high featured main wall including 16 lines for both lead and top rope climbing.

Owned and operated by the retail and expedition company Adventure Peaks. The wall strives to keep climbing assessable to as many of the community as possible, whilst introducing novices to the fun and excitement of indoor climbing, in a safe and professional manner.

The wall is a member of the Association of British Climbing Walls, and is operated to industry best practice. It has always been run by a small and dedicated team of qualified instructors working hard to maintain the same high levels client satisfaction offered by Adventure Peaks. The team are the walls greatest asset. They have fostered a welcoming culture whilst providing an opportunity to see all achieve through indoor climbing. The wall offers competent climbers the use of the wall unsupervised, whilst novice climbers take advantage of courses, lessons and 'have a go' session. Outdoor rock climbing and abseil session are occasionally run, and operate under Adventure Peaks policy.

The wall's client base consists of:
  • the local climbing community, many of which attend the local university
  • visiting competent climbers
  • local residence that are new to climbing
  • local children who attend regular kids climbing clubs
  • visitors to the area looking to try climbing
  • organisations, schools and groups such as Scouts
  • External instructors bringing groups to the wall
The wall continually looks to improve its facilities and to develop products and client reach. With the use of route setting, instruction, marketing and customer feedback the wall has develop a sound reputation, and become a well-used community and visitor hub.

Position Summary

The Manager of Ambleside Climbing Wall (ACW) is responsible for the day to day running, up keep, development and promotion of climbing within the indoor climbing facility. It is a dynamic and flexible position with many facets. Working within existing policy and procedure you will be required to ensure that the use of the climbing facility is as safe as reasonably practical for all clients and staff

The position includes:
  • Delivery of a high standard of customer service.
  • Lead in the improvement of all service areas.
  • Front line contact for customer enquiries.
  • Provide formal instruction/coaching and informal encouragement, mentoring and skills advice to clients.
  • Supervise all other members of the team.
  • Ensure that the team deliver a high standard of customer service and an exciting experience to all visitors.
Experience & Qualifications required
  • Active Interest in Mountain Walking or Climbing
  • CWA qualified or SPA or SPA TRAINED
  • A can-do Outlook
