Job Description SummaryDowty Propellers, which is a part of the GE Aerospace organization is a world-leading manufacturer of integrated propeller systems. Its products are used in applications that range from regional and military aircraft to marine hovercrafts. Dowty Propellers is looking for an experienced Stress Analysis Engineer to join its team of analysis engineers.
Reporting to the Engineering Analysis Manager the Advanced Lead Stress Engineer will have extensive experience in mechanical stress analysis and FE modelling. Knowledge of composite analysis and rotating assemblies would be a distinct advantage. The role is broad in scope, covering everything from tools development and new product introduction, to supporting OE production, repairs, and customer operations.Job Description

Role and Responsibilities

  • Perform mechanical analyses (with hand calculations and Finite Element Analysis – FEA) with a variety of proprietary and commercial tools, contributing to the design of a wide variety of components.
  • Responsible for taking part in a design process of propeller systems (including composite and metallic structures), test rigs and tooling components.
  • Support the design process from concept phase through to completion ensuring regulatory compliance is achieved.
  • Progress structural and mechanical design modifications in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  • Able to work towards stress approval status for OE production and repairs, and to also work towards Compliance Verification Engineer (CVE) status.
  • Support analysis tools development, technical instructions and general stress methods.
  • Create documentation of technical data generated to justify analysed components (consistent with engineering policies and procedures).
  • Monitor and effectively communicate projects status, issues and significant developments.
  • Work within defined parameters to make decisions to solve engineering problems, applying solid engineering principles and judgment to find feasible solutions.
  • Lead the execution of the assigned project tasks.
  • Provide technical leadership & guidance to personnel supporting the assigned project.


Essential Requirements

  • Degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering or equivalent.
  • Extensive experience required as a Stress Engineer at a senior level within the aerospace industry and able to demonstrate knowledge and hands on capability of both classical hand calculation procedures and finite element methods. Demonstrated experience with commercial analysis packages required (Ansys Classic/Workbench, Hypermesh, Creo etc.).
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes and of the methods used for repairs to metallic and composite components.
  • Excellent Communication skills, with strong written and verbal communication skills, can communicate across all levels from shop floor to customers and up to Board level.
  • A logical problem solver who can operate effectively under stretching project constraints.
  • Target oriented, responsible, passion to learn, open mind with strong motivation.


Desired Characteristics

  • A Stress Signatory within an Aerospace Design Organisation responsible for the approval of technical reports, drawings, and concessions.
  • Experience in structural dynamics and modal analysis.
  • Catia V5 knowledge and experience.
  • Tools development and coding using Matlab, Python, Fortran etc.
  • Knowledge of propeller theory.
  • Knowledge of propeller certification and airworthiness requirements.
