London, Greater London, United Kingdom SOAS University of London Full time

Contract Type: Fixed Term- 9 months

Hours: 14 hours per week (35 hours per week x 0.4)

SOAS University of London is the leading Higher Education institution in Europe specialising in the study of Asia, Africa and the Middle East. SOAS is positioned to play a leading role in reimagining higher education globally, with a new strategic plan in place as the basis for institutional renewal and revitalisation. SOAS is committed to student responsiveness and research intensity, and is moving towards a new model of international partnerships which is responsive to the transnational character of our global challenges.

About the Department

The World Philosophies programme in the Department of History, Religion and Philosophies covers the study of the philosophical traditions of Europe, Africa, Asia and the Middle East. We are unique for approaching the subjects from global perspectives, rather than through a purely western-centric framework, and for our unrivalled coverage of those regions. Our innovative and progressive teaching has contributed to our recent ranking of 11th in the UK for philosophy (the Complete University Guide 2023).

About the Role

The School of History, Religions and Philosophies seeks to appoint a fixed-term Lecturer in Philosophy with expertise in African philosophy from September 2024 to May 2025. SOAS has been one of the first institutions in the world to develop a Philosophy programme that showcases the richness of philosophical and intellectual traditions from a global perspective. The successful candidate will be appointed as a teaching-only (Academic and Education Route) staff to cover the teaching of a colleague on research leave.

The responsibilities of the post-holder will include:

  • Philosophy (PG), and Global Traditions of Philosophical Hermeneutics.
  • Contributing to the administrative work of the School of History, Religions and Philosophies.
  • To supervise dissertations by undergraduate students.
  • To prepare, mark and provide feedback in connection with the range of assessment and examination systems in operation.

Closing date: Tuesday 25th June 2024

Interviews date: Mid July Via MS Teams
