Wimborne Minster, Dorset, United Kingdom NATIONAL GRID PLC Full time
What you will do in your working day

Our three-year Higher Apprenticeship Substations programme will train you to become an engineer in one of our substations, where we transform high-voltage electricity into low-voltage electricity to make it usable for homes and businesses.

You'll be learning about
  • Testing equipment, safety, protection and control of the system
  • Substation refurbishment maintenance
  • Providing technical support
  • Problem diagnosis and fault fixing
This is a job where the decisions you make will impact the transmission of electricity in England and Wales for the next 40 or 50 years. A job where you'll be delivering maintenance work, replacing and refurbishing assets, fixing mechanical and electrical issues, and connecting new customers. A job that helps connect energy from renewable sources such as wind and solar farms, to the transmission network.

Eventually, you may even be commissioning new equipment onto the system and taking responsibility for the safety of your co-workers. If that sounds like something that you'd like to be part of, we'd be very interested in talking to you

The training you will be getting

Initially you will be at our National Training Centre in Eakring, Nottinghamshire for your Induction period which is around six weeks, then periodically for technical training.

In the first year, you will spend 70% of your time at the Eakring Training Centre with the remaining 30% on site (gathering site-based experience).

Year two will be 50/50 at Eakring and on site and in the
third year 70% on site and 30% at Eakring training centre.

You will get a HNC in Electrical Power Protection and Plant Commissioning.

What to expect at the end of your apprenticeship

Upon successful completion of the programme, you will join National Grid as a Substation Engineer.
