Leeds, Leeds, United Kingdom Leeds DP and PA Support hub Full time

This young man has severe learning disabilities, medical and complex special needs. He uses a wheelchair for all mobility and has severe communication difficulties. (He is pre-verbal and has a mental age considerably younger than his years). He is dependent upon caregivers for all his personal care and suffers from severe oesophageal problems. He has regular seizures which need to be monitored, and correctly and efficiently administering medication is a key element to this role. He has also recently been diagnosed with dysglycemia (which is controlled via his diet).

This young man is very sociable, and he recognises and responds to familiar faces. He does not present with challenging behaviour.

He has no verbal speech but experiments with volume, tone, and range. He is an incredibly happy chap

He is predominantly gastrostomy fed, with some supplementary concessions.

Purpose of the job:

This young man needs one-to-two personal care and one-to-one support at all times, 24/7.

He also needs someone to interact with him one to one to provide him with some stimulation and to do some physiotherapy exercises with him on a regular basis. As such this is a physically and mentally demanding role.

It would be extremely helpful to him to have some support to help him to increase his social and leisure activities, where possible.

You may be required to take him out in the community. He enjoys interaction with other people, and being outdoors and you may be asked to accompany/assist with trips and activities, particularly during the summer months.

To be ready to accompany this young man to medical appointments, or indeed to help to stimulate him in the home, this will involve discussion with the parents before going out.

To be a good companion, fun and uplifting, who has a good understanding of what is required for a young adult with learning difficulties who can keep him happy and interested at all times.

To be flexible both in attitude and with the working day – which can often change

To become an additional family member, taking up responsibilities and 'mucking in'

Reliability:

As a key person in this young man's life, it is imperative that you can be relied upon and trusted. You will be working as part of a team with a small number of other carers (not including the parents) and if for any reason you are unable to carry out your duties, become ill or have planned holidays, you must ensure that one of the other carers can cover for you, and that the parents are aware of this. This young person's health and wellbeing are your priority, and you have a duty of care to him and his family.

Tasks:

Ensuring that you get to whatever activity is planned on time and safely.

Ensuring that you keep the young man stimulated and happy.

Ensure that each time you take out the young man or spend time with him in the home, that he is involved and happy in whatever activity you are doing.

Confidentiality:

You will be expected to keep total confidentiality at all times.

You must treat this person with respect and in turn you will be treated with respect.

You must undertake to attend training courses on Child Protection if it is felt that these may be needed for the role.

Holiday Entitlement:

You will be entitled to 5.6 weeks paid holiday each year pro rata. You will be required to give at least two weeks notice for any holiday required so that alternative arrangements can be made.

A DBS is required for this role.

Full training will be given in the following (and possibly additional areas as required)

  • First Aid
  • Hoisting & handling
  • Gastrostomy feeding
  • Conveen care
  • Tissue Management

This role is perfect for those wanting a future role in healthcare, personal care or working with children.
