Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom Babraham Institute Full time

The Babraham Institute is a charity which is world renowned for its research in life sciences to enhance lives and improve wellbeing. The overarching goal of the Hayley Sharpe lab is to understand intercellular communication across difference systems, with a focus on how changes in metabolic and redox states are sensed by the phosphotyrosine machinery in cells.

We are looking to welcome a new ERC-funded postdoctoral research scientist to our team to work on molecular mechanisms of T cell activation. The successful applicant will gain insights into the proximal events that occur downstream of antigen binding to the T cell receptor, a key unsolved mystery in the field.

The focus will be on how and where second messengers are generated that influence kinases and phosphatases that are essential for signal initiation and propagation. Three key areas of impact are

  1. Understanding how the microenvironment influences immune responses.
  2. Generating knowledge that could improve T-cell based therapies (such as CAR-T approaches)
  3. Translation to signalling principles by analogous receptor paradigms in other cells, such as B lymphocytes.

The project will implement a variety of cellular and molecular techniques, including mouse models of infection, models for graded T cell signalling, live cell imaging, tissue histology, flow cytometry, CRISPR/cas9 genome editing, cell culture and molecular biology. The candidate will play a central role in driving this project forward using new experimental models developed by the laboratory and will take advantage of collaborations with labs in our Immunology department.

The post-holder will benefit from world-class research facilities, the collegial environment of the Institute and the wider scientific research community in the Cambridge area.

The ideal candidate will hold a PhD in immunology, biochemistry, molecular/cell Biology, or a relevant subject; and their expertise may include research experience with immunology, signalling, cell imaging, redox biology and/or mechanobiology of T cells.

This is a limited term appointment with funding for this post available for a period of 3 years in the first instance.
