Research Associate in Autonomous Polymer Synthesis

We have an exciting opportunity in the School of Chemical, Materials and Biological Engineering for someone wishing to implement autonomous reactor platforms for polymer synthesis.
We are looking for someone with a PhD in Chemical Engineering or Chemistry and a strong background in polymer synthesis, flow chemistry, and automation. The ideal candidate will work closely with project partners at the University of Leeds and explore collaboration opportunities with academia and industry. The position will also involve national and international travel to disseminate research.
As part of an EPSRC funded project you will develop reactor platforms equipped with machine learning algorithms which can accelerate discovery of new polymer materials. The project will focus on technically challenging polymerisation processes (e.g. living anionic polymerisation) which typically require stringent experimental procedures to eliminate all impurities. These materials are critical components of a wide range of formulated products and moving to sustainable alternatives is imperative. Furthermore, the technologies will also bring benefits in the context of sustainability - using less energy and producing less waste.
You will be based in Professor Nick Warren's research group which focuses on accelerating innovation in polymer synthesis and will collaborate closely with Professor Nik Kapur and Professor Richard Bourne at the University of Leeds. This team has several internationally recognised outputs focussed on flow chemistry and automation for polymer synthesis (e.g. React. Chem. Eng., 2023,8, 707 ; Polym. Chem., 2022,13, 157).
