About Us:

The appointee will join the School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences, and the Department of Neuroimaging within the School of Neuroscience. The Departments are highly collaborative and comprise of teams of clinical and scientific researchers investigating diseases using multimodal imaging.

About the role:

The research associate will join an early-stage translational medical research project, combining artificial intelligence (AI) and portable ultra-low-field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Specifically, the project aims to develop and analytically validate an AI tool for automatic triaging of portable ultra-low-field MRI brain scans of adult patients into "normal" and "abnormal" for the purposes of triage.

The role will involve acquisition and analysis of MRI data, as well as development of AI models. The post requires a skilled data scientist with expertise in deep learning as applied to computer vision, particularly in the context of medical imaging. Some clinical experience is desirable, including interaction with patients.

This is a full-time post, and you will be offered a fixed term contract for 18 months.

Essential criteria

  1. PhD qualified in relevant subject area (or pending results)*
  2. Excellent computer programming abilities evidenced by available code
  3. Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  4. Ability to work well as an effective member of a multidisciplinary team and to share and encourage good practice
  5. The ability to take individual responsibility for planning and undertaking own work, according to clinical and scientific deadlines
  6. Presenting scientific research in the form of papers, posters or oral presentations
  7. Understanding of the concepts and application of research ethics

Desirable criteria

  1. Expertise in Python programming for Machine and Deep Learning, e.g., sklearn, pytorch, tensorflow
  2. Expertise working with large magnetic resonance (neuro)imaging datasets
  3. Experience with the use of computing servers
  4. Clinical experience, e.g., interaction with or handling of patients
