The Senior Health & Safety Manager will be responsible for interfacing with all Partners on site health and safety matters for projects within the manufacturing programme, reporting to the Health & Safety Lead.

You'll be responsible for:

  • Participate in creating, maintaining, and improving health, safety, and wellbeing in relation to site activities.
  • Maintain and develop continuous improvement of Partners, third party stakeholders, and AWE health & safety systems, policies, procedures, and work instructions, to improve efficiency, meet developing organisational requirements and appropriate internal, external and regulatory standards.
  • Influence multi-disciplinary project teams on health and safety issues relating to pre-construction planning, decommissioning & project evolution.
  • Develop timely project-based health and safety risk profiles to direct risk-based inspection and other assurance activities as may be necessary.
  • Provide support to the Client organisation that Partners are complying with their requirements under Construction (Design & Management) Regulations 2015.
  • Participate and advise as a subject matter expert in constructability, maintainability, and operability reviews.
  • Undertake inspections, carry out accident investigations, keep records and write reports.
  • Co-ordinate and collate information required to produce scheduled H&S reports and identify trends and early warnings of possible issues and recommend appropriate action.
  • Carry out audits of construction activities on site to ensure that the requirements set out in the construction phase plan are adhered to.
  • Provide advice on the interpretation and application of the H&S management system. This will include the provision of relevant training, briefings, and information.
  • Carry out regular behavioural safety conversations with construction teams on site.
  • Pro-active creation and implementation of programmes to underpin zero tolerance to HSE issues/problems.
  • Increase awareness of all HSE matters.
  • Work with peers in other disciplines to ensure creation of coherent and integrated polices and systems that avoid unnecessary duplication and dissipation of effort.

You'll need to have:

  • Significant understanding of health, safety and welfare standards and guidance and the legislation relevant to the nuclear design and construction and site investigation activities.
  • Experience of investigating the direct and root causes of health and safety incidents and near misses to identify recommendations and actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to develop good working relationships with the client team and the wider construction industry.
  • Skilful in distilling knowledge and building skills in others and the capacity to be pragmatic and practical in the way that technical issues are addressed.
  • Good knowledge of large organisational, process plant and site operations.
  • Ability to establish a vision and develop/implement strategy to attain it.
  • Excellent knowledge of national and international HSE standards
  • Excellent knowledge of CDM Regulations.
  • Proven track record of achieving excellent safety results on major engineering and construction projects within a nuclear and/or defence environment.

You'll also have:

  • Chartered status and appropriate professional memberships. Tech IOSH or equivalent. NEBOSH HSE Diploma or European equivalent
  • Significant understanding of HSE and the legislation and experience relevant to working within a nuclear regulated environment.
  • Full membership of an appropriate Professional Institution.
  • Significant experience of implementing health and safety management systems developing reliable and resilient safety systems and processes, writing procedures, and writing reports.
  • Experience of co-ordinating between contractors to support resolving health and safety interface issues across complex and high-risk operations.
  • Excellent knowledge of CDM Regulations.
  • Experience of nuclear or high secure sectors desirable.
  • Experience with hazardous materials such as Nuclear, Petrochemicals.
  • DV cleared. Minimum SC cleared with ability to obtain DV clearance.
