As a Senior Engineer (Development) at SP Energy Networks, you will play a pivotal role in maintaining the integrity and efficiency of our power systems. You will oversee the substation civils repair and maintenance (R&M) programme, ensuring all SP Manweb (SPM) licence areas are serviced effectively. Your leadership will extend to managing team leaders responsible for OHL and substation inspections, as well as the physical security project manager, ensuring high standards of safety and performance.

What you'll be doing

You will:

  • Deliver outputs in line with financial, regulatory, and business plan objectives whilst optimising various allowances.
  • Managing the substation civils repair and maintenance (R&M) programme across the SPM licence area.
  • Overseeing the substation ground maintenance programme to ensure compliance and efficiency.
  • Leading the OHL inspections and substation inspections team leaders, setting objectives and monitoring progress.
  • Directing the physical security programme project manager and ensuring the successful delivery of the programme
  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams to enhance system reliability and operational excellence.
  • Implementing strategic initiatives to improve processes and technologies within the engineering department.
  • Drive robust project plans from the team to facilitate deliverables in line with district and licence plans that are devised to minimise outages to customers.
  • Ensure efficient and effective delivery of operational performance targets whilst demonstrating changes to drive improvements where appropriate.
  • Drive continual performance improvement through analysis of resource, process & outputs to understand programme position & risks.
  • Integrate asset stewardship values through sound engineering principles, coordinated planning and delivery activities to improve integrity, safety and longevity of the electrical network.
  • Promotes an exemplary safety culture and ensures that all safety legislation is implemented and delivered through all activities.
  • Ensure the accurate and timely capture and recording of data within corporate systems and ensuring excellent housekeeping across the team for all corporate data actions.
  • Responsibility for the quality and financial assurance of projects delivered by the team.

Delivery Specific Responsibilities

  • Ensuring all maintenance and inspection programmes are aligned with company standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Developing and managing budgets for the R&M and ground maintenance programmes.
  • Conducting regular reviews and updates of maintenance strategies to optimise performance.
  • Providing technical guidance and support to team leaders and project managers
  • Facilitating continuous improvement by incorporating industry best practices into programme operations.
  • Maintaining clear communication channels with all stakeholders, reporting on programme status and milestones.
  • Feedback weekly & monthly progress on delivery to Head of Delivery.
  • Contribute to safety stand downs / safety calls where required.

What you'll bring

This role requires a strategic thinker with a strong technical background in electrical engineering, leadership experience, and a commitment to safety and excellence in the energy sector with awareness and understanding of key business drivers and strategies. They will be able to utilise these skills to effectively manage competing priorities and devise solutions for problems/challenges. It is vital that they will have effective stakeholder, customer service and management engagement skills.

To be successful, as a minimum you will have:

  • Engineering/Professional qualification or equivalent experience (including HNC or equivalent)
  • Proven experience in the delivery & project management of engineering projects, ideally including both planned & reactive works.
  • Experience & understanding of network design & operation, safety rules and operational policies & procedures.
  • Awareness of the regulatory environment, including relevant output and incentive mechanisms.
  • Understanding of network operation, design and use.
  • General contract and commercial awareness.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Current UK driving licence (Travel required).
