Groundwork Yorkshire Ranger team manage three country parks on behalf of the Land Trust: Fryston Country Trails, Frickley Country Park and Rabbit Ings Country Park. The rangers are responsible for keeping the sites safe for visitors, maintaining and improving habitats for the local wildlife and running events for schools and communities.

The role of Community Ranger will provide support to the existing team with the practical management on the parks as well as creating opportunities and further developing events and activities for the local community. We are looking for an enthusiastic individual who has experience working with and educating people of all ages, who loves being outdoors and has an interest in the natural environment.

Working across 3 sites: Fryston Country Trails, Frickley Country Park and Rabbit Ings Country Park.

REPORTING TO:

RESPONSIBLE FOR:

Volunteers and visiting groups.

POST HOURS/HOLIDAYS:

25 days annual leave per annum plus statutory days

Flexi and TOIL system in operation

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF SERVICE:

The post will involve some evening and weekend work, as required, in relation to events and activities etc.

Full driving licence required.

Enhanced DBS check required

PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES OF THE POST

  • To enable Groundwork to fulfill its mission to build sustainable communities in areas of need through joint action, working with the community and partners to improve quality of life and bring about positive change to people's lifestyles and the environment.
  • To encourage the safe public use of the sites through effective community engagement and events.
  • To assist in the management and delivery of a range of activities that meet the maintenance requirements for three country parks: Fryston Country Trails, Rabbit Ings and Frickley Country Park.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To work with local schools, community groups and the public to develop and deliver innovative methods of environmental education through outdoor learning and events.
  • To organise events on and around the sites to publicise and encourage greater community participation of the site facilities.
  • To work in partnership with all local stakeholders (across sectors) who have an interest in the sites.
  • To monitor and maintain all health and safety requirements for the sites.
  • To work with the local community to develop and lead on volunteering opportunities across the parks.
  • To undertake specific site maintenance work in line with respective management plans, to ensure all sites are fit for use and safe for visitors and staff.
  • Demonstrate good communication skills and a friendly and positive attitude to all partners and community members. Manage communication skills to tailor approach to different audiences if required, taking account of different perspectives, personalities, behaviours and cultures.
  • To assist in facilitating the conservation and maintenance of the restored colliery sites including biodiversity, Rights of Way, habitat management and monitoring flora and fauna.
  • Maintaining tools and equipment in a safe, useable condition.
  • As a small team, it is important that all staff are able to work effectively together and provide mutual support. Therefore, the post holder may be called upon to assist in other aspects of the team and organisation's activities.
  • Provide feedback and evaluate progress and achievements as required by Groundwork and funders to ensure that stipulated targets, outputs and outcomes are met.
  • To ensure adherence with all corporate Policies and Procedures in place, in particular Health and Safety Policy, Safeguarding Policy and Equal Opportunities and Diversity Policy, that may change from time to time.
  • Work alongside the Senior Countryside Ranger to develop ideas for bids and funding applications to resource community projects and programmes.
  • To liaise with the appropriate enforcement agencies in respect of any issues or misuse of the sites
