Job Purpose:

We are passionate about working together to make a positive difference to the lives of children and young people to 'have the best life possible' by providing them with a supportive and homely environment that is centred on their individual needs. This will be achieved by putting the child / young person at the centre of all support planning and developing strategies that will enable the child/young person to develop skills in all aspects of their life to give them independence and feeling included in their communities based on what is important to them.

The role of the support worker is to:

  • Provide support in a homely environment which is unique to each child/young person where they feel happy and safe.
  • To work as a team providing bespoke support unique to each child's development needs.
  • To ensure that you promote, and value 'Active Support', 'Positive Behaviour Support' and the 'Reduction of Restrictive Practices' approaches as a central method of enabling children and young people to engage more in their daily lives; building strong relationships with those surrounding them, developing independent living skills and becoming active members within their communities through delivering high quality care.

Duties and Responsibilities - Job Specific

  • To provide the right level of support that meets the child /young person's care and support needs as identified in their outcome focused personal plans, and in accordance with safe working practices.
  • Demonstrate commitment, openness, and willing to engage with the approach to the model of care in order to meet the needs of the children/young people.
  • To follow Risk assessments, Positive Behaviour Support Plans and other assessments and strategies to develop the child/young person's skills and improve their quality of life
  • Develop own skills to successfully communicate with the child/young person following a strategy that they would understand.
  • To create a homely, warm, kind, friendly, environment ensuring that all your actions are transparent and open for discussion in professional supervision in accordance with the Codes of Professional Practice for Social Care.
  • To be able to develop trusted professional relationships with children and young people to keep them safe, balancing empowerment and limit setting in a nurturing, supportive and consistent way.
  • To observe, recognise, record, and interpret boundaries and set limits in relation to children and young people and respond to challenging behaviour looking beyond the behaviour and understanding the cause and reason for the behaviour.
  • To develop close professional links with other professionals and organisations to understand and respond to the needs of the children/young people.
  • Attend and engage in regular team meetings and planning sessions to discuss what is working well to support the child/young person to develop.
  • Report anything to the line manager which might be harmful or a threat to the health, safety, and wellbeing of the children and young people. To be responsible for health and safety practices at work and promplty reporting all hazards to the manager and/or taking action to address them where and when appropriate.
  • To undertake sleep-in duties, waking nights and work unsociable hours and waking night duties to meet the individual needs of the children and young people.
  • To support the child to develop and maintain relationships with family members and friends
  • To maintain records and read records relating to the child/young person to understand how to support them and recognise patterns of behaviour the child is developing that they may require further support to manage.
  • Care Workers can work in other care settings within the county. Settings include those supporting individuals with learning disabilities and /or complex emotional and behavioural needs and full training and support will be provided.
