Box Hill The Old Fort Tadworth KT LB, United Kingdom National Trust Full time

Location: Box Hill, The Old Fort, Tadworth, KT20 7LB
Contract Type: Permanent
Reference/IRC: IRC151537
Closing Date: 19/05/2024
Salary: £28,548 per annum

We've got an exciting opportunity for an Area Ranger to join our team at Box Hill.

Interviews will be held on the 29th of May.

Situated just 15 miles from London, Box Hill is a famed beauty spot in the North Downs. If you like the great outdoors, you'll love this stunning location with its breath-taking views, fantastic walks and colourful wildlife. Box Hill has a thriving café and an information hub. You'll need your own transport to get here, however this is your chance to join a close-knit and small team in a truly idyllic location.

Reporting to the lead ranger, you'll be managing a ranger, an assistant ranger and a group of dedicated volunteers. You'll also work with our visitor operations and other ranger teams in the Surrey Hills to manage a high visitor site and protect our rare flora and fauna.

You'll support your fellow rangers in undertaking engagement and conservation work, contributing towards Countryside Stewardship targets. You'll also be responsible for communicating our conservation work to new and existing audiences, through events, guided walks and engagement with local communities. You'll understand the need for our countryside sites to bring in income, so your business ideas will play an important part in the team's success.

You'll be leading your team on tree safety and woodland management across the properties, which have very significant woodland holdings, with exciting plans to make them much more self-sustainable in the future.

You'll be responsible for managing the conservation grazing across the chalk grassland on Box Hill with the support of the lead ranger. You'll build and maintain strong professional relationships with our farming tenants, graziers, contractors, partners and neighbours to deliver more for Land and Nature.

You'll also take responsibility for compliance, including the health and safety of your team, visitors, tree safety, and environmental management, as well as setting and leading standards relating to environmental practice.

We'd love you to have the following skills and experience:

  • evidence of land, access and conservation management, including delivery of projects and supervision of contractors.
  • experience of developing and delivering work programmes to meet conservation, access and project outcomes.
  • ability to communicate at various levels, including colleagues, volunteers and visitors.
  • strong leadership, effective organisation and prioritisation skills
  • practical skills, competencies and experience across a range of countryside disciplines, including a full UK driving licence.
  • good understanding of risk and compliance processes
