We are looking for a Public Engagement Officer with a passion for engaging diverse audiences with science and technology to join our team at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire. The team delivers a programme of activities at the Laboratory, local area and nationally. We strive to share the wonder of science and technology carried out by STFC giving particular focus to reaching groups who are currently underserved and underrepresented within STEM.

We offer insight into groundbreaking science and represent a diverse range of backgrounds and experience. The Public Engagement team works closely with staff, particularly our apprentice and graduate cohorts, to support them to be involved with three days of public engagement activities per year. Our team also works closely with the Skills Centre team, and together we aim to increase awareness of the range of jobs and opportunities within science and technology. This two-year fixed term role will support this work through onsite and offsite career events, as well as an online work experience programme.

Programme Delivery and Development

  • Attending and supporting staff at career events on site and at local schools and colleges within an hour from Campus, developing and maintaining shared career resources;
  • Establishing and delivering an online Work Experience programme, building on the success of previous online work experience programmes;
  • Expanding the current in-person Work Experience programme to offer more opportunities for our priority audiences;
  • Reviewing, reflecting and improving on work delivered through lessons learnt and evaluation.

Relationships with stakeholders

  • Building lasting relationships with schools and colleges, collaborating effectively (both written and verbally) to ensure that events and activities meet the needs of those being engaged;
  • Being an active team member and contributing to the wider National Laboratory Public Engagement Group programming;
  • Supervising and/or mentoring staff volunteers, in particular early careers staff, during the preparation and delivery of events or as part of staff training programmes.

Person specification

  • Knowledge of STEM career pathways and/or career advice and guidance, or a clear willingness to develop this
  • Ability to communicate effectively with audiences of different ages or social-cultural backgrounds
  • Event planning and delivery experience, particularly online
  • Experience developing relationships with secondary schools/colleges and teachers/tutors
  • Experience of and competence with the use of standard Office software, particularly Microsoft Excel
  • Self-starter with ability to collaborate effectively with others to manage priorities for events, small project and programmes
