PhD in Chemical Engineering: Anti-fouling coatings for reduced waste

Overview:
The deterioration of surfaces by microorganisms, limescale, and other harmful substances poses significant challenges both economically and socially. This degradation reduces efficiency, increases energy consumption for heat exchangers, shortens the lifespan of components, and contributes to waste generation. Achieving net zero emissions requires materials to maintain high efficiency and durability. As a result, it is essential to develop methods that prolong the lifespan of various components across different industries. A recent breakthrough in the form of a reversible glue, designed for recycling purposes, provides a promising solution. This water-based, cost-effective glue with a long shelf life consists of two emulsion formulations, each containing nanoparticles with different charges. When applied, these formulations create electrostatic adhesion between surfaces. Furthermore, these formulations possess biocidal or nonfouling properties when used individually as coatings. With their simple synthesis process and versatility in coating diverse surfaces, these formulations offer a cost-efficient and highly effective means of surface protection. Once the coatings reach the end of their lifespan, they can be easily removed using paint thinner, allowing for surface recoating. In this project, the focus will be on optimizing these coatings for biocidal or nonfouling applications, particularly in combating bacterial contamination. You will be part of a collaborative team dedicated to enhancing the reversible glue, which now includes experts in electrical engineering. This supportive community will assist you in refining and perfecting these coatings for a successful PhD project and potential commercial utilization.

Eligibility Criteria: To qualify, you must hold or anticipate obtaining a minimum 2:1 Honours degree or its international equivalent in a relevant field related to the proposed PhD project (such as physical sciences, computing, mathematics, or engineering). Additionally, essential requirements include a passion for research, the ability to work independently, strong analytical skills, and excellent verbal and written communication abilities. Applicants whose native language is not English must achieve an IELTS score of 6.5 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in all sub-skills. This opportunity is exclusively available to Home (UK) students.
