The purpose of this role is to support the University in meeting the needs of students with complex or enduring mental health problems by facilitating and coordinating access to appropriate mental health services, developing psychological methods with the student to increase their confidence in managing distress and difficult situations, and offering timely response to students at risk or in crisis by providing safety and stabilisation work.

Our staff meet with students primarily on a one one-to-one basis (either in-person or on video call), but also by offering telephone/email, and group support. The role holder works as a member of the Student Services team in a flexible, collaborative and responsive manner.

The Mental Health Coordinator will hold a professional qualification (educated to degree level or equivalent, and where appropriate hold a post graduate qualification). The successful applicant will have registration/accreditation with a recognised professional body. Experience of working with adults or young people with serious or enduring mental health difficulties is essential, as is knowledge of relevant legislation relating to mental health and disability.

The post-holder will have excellent written and verbal communication skills and will be able to work independently as well as part of the wider Student Services team. Additionally, they will liaise with academic schools and the wider University as required and will work closely with external agencies, such as General Practitioners and Community Mental Health Teams, to ensure a collaborative and holistic approach.

The successful applicant will play a key role in supporting the University's response to critical student incidents where mental health may be a contributory factor. A flexible approach is necessary for this role.
