In House- Construction Legal Counsel

Our client is a major UK plc and one of the leading lights in the Construction sector.

Reporting to the Head of Legal, this newly created position will work with a whole range of business units operating across the UK. The legal team have developed a fantastic reputation across the business and are involved at inception with major projects across the group.

The legal team work autonomously across the UK with excellent support from long serving colleagues who know the business inside and out.

This role will engage with stakeholders across a complex organisation facing ever more complex needs. You will work closely, for example, with senior directors in Building, Planning and Highways where there has been huge and sustained growth.

Some of the main responsibilities will centre around some of the following areas.

Building contracts, professional appointments, collateral warranties, performance bonds, parent company guarantees, insurance and issues related to the construction and development process. This role will also involve advising upon day-to-day project issues and the workload is varied.

The role will be largely non contentious in nature but we would also be interested in speaking with Construction lawyers with a contentious background who are interested in developing their skill in more transactional work. There will be a requirement for pre litigation and contract interpretation with any adjudication work being passed to outside counsel. This is a largely non contentious role.

More about the role

• Being part of an established legal team, which provides strategic support across the business. It is an interesting role, involving real interaction with the commercial teams and is an excellent opportunity to obtain exposure to the business

• Drafting, reviewing and negotiating construction contracts (JCT, NEC, IChemE) and associated project documentation from circa £5m to £100m in value

• Providing advice on project issues

• Handling low value disputes

There will be an expectation to spend 2 days in the office local to your location. With offices and hubs across the UK the legal team are able to provide a fantastic geographical coverage across the business.

To be considered for this role you will need to have at least 2 years post qualified experience as a Solicitor or Barrister. You will have a background in Construction law and have a strong interest in moving in house. We are happy to consider candidates at the mid to senior level budget permitting.

This is a full time position.
