The Role

Do you have a strong drive to make a difference for animal welfare?


As a senior laboratory animal vet, you will be responsible for a veterinary team that acts as the advocates for the animals.

You will need to use your clinical, management, and interpersonal skills to ensure that the team upholds the highest standards of welfare and ethical consideration, for animals that are part of the University's animal-based research.


To provide a comprehensive veterinary service for Newcastle University animal facilities, in fulfilling the extensive and significant legal responsibilities of the Named Veterinary Surgeon under the Animal (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 (ASPA 1986 amendment regulations This post is intended to manage the veterinary team and the service across all units that house common laboratory species, non-human primates, and livestock with a focus on anaesthesia, analgesia and peri-operative care.

  • Ensuring veterinary care and supporting research programs involving a variety of species including a variety of genetically altered mouse models and non human primates.
To include maintaining appropriate veterinary and other records while assisting the Director in ensuring that the University complies with the provisions of the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act

  • Ensuring expert, veterinary advice and support is provided to; animal care technicians and researchers to actively safeguard animal welfare, and on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease in animals used in research
  • Ensuring the provision of professional and technical assistance and specialised advice to research workers on a variety of projects, particularly those involving anaesthesia and surgical procedures
  • Maintaining an internal and external network of fellow professionals, keep up to date with developments in laboratory animal science and laboratory animal anaesthesia and to identify new areas for improvement, facilitate implementation of the '3Rs' and recommend changes to promote 'Best Practice' in animal care and welfare
  • Participate in and provide professional advice to the Animal Welfare Ethical Review Board at Newcastle University
  • Contribute strategically to the development of veterinary specialist support services for the university's research animal facilities.
To lead specific projects and oversee specific service developments as required by the Director

  • Advising researchers and others on implementation of the 3Rs focussing on the impact of procedures, recognising pain, suffering, distress and lasting harm, surgical techniques & post op care, controlled drugs and therapeutics, anaesthesia, analgesia, and strategies for minimising severity
  • Act as a course tutor for the Department's training courses for researchers and other parties, to provide practical training for personnel at all levels.
To contribute to the implementation of appropriately high standards to ensure external accreditation of training courses is maintained

  • Drive a culture of care for staff and animals
  • Daily management of the veterinary team to ensure high performance.
Inspiring and motivating the team to achieve high performance levels and managing underperformance effectively

  • Work collaboratively with other named individuals, other CBC teams e.
g., colony management team and the local animal research community to ensure smooth operations, this will include import/export, health screening, treatments, reassessment etc

  • Provide strategic leadership alongside the Technical Manager of Operations, the Business Operations Manager and Director as a Senior Management Team Member
  • Be accountable for the health and safety in relation to veterinary activities including the management of controlled drugs and participate in driving the sustainability goals of the department where appropriate
  • Accountable for the management and service delivery in our theatre suite, driving efficiencies and leading on identification of new equipment etc in support of research fields
  • Having experience with complex anaesthesia regimes in a variety of species
  • Accountable for monitoring the health status of the various species in line with industry standards and reviewing biosecurity methods between species
The Person

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Experience of working as a Named veterinary Surgeon or deputising under the Animal (Scientific Procedures) Act or equivalent legislation
  • Experience of advanced/complex anaesthesia or surgical procedures, imaging and diagnostic techniques
  • Experience and participation in Animal Welfare Ethical Review Bodies / processes or equivalent
  • Proven ability to generate and manage complex and demanding projects
  • High level planning, organising and problem solving skills, with a proactive solution based and innovative approach; utilising excellent prioritisation skills and effective delegation
  • Excellent management skills with experience of managing a team to high performance
  • Proven ability to influence, motivate individuals and transfer knowledge and skills effectively

  • Experience with working with Non-Human Primates in a research context

Qualifications

  • University degree in veterinary medicine
  • Currently holds registration or is eligible for immediate registration as a MRCVS
Desirable

  • Completed Named Veterinary Surgeons Course
  • Post graduate qualification related to anaesthesia or laboratory animal science
  • Act as an Official Veterinarian (OV) for small / laboratory animals
