Mercer's Multi Asset Team (MAT) is a global team responsible for designing multi asset portfolios, developing Mercer's house views on markets & economies and researching external multi-asset managers. The team serves a diverse client base, including both Mercer's delegated investment teams and our Segment Investment Committees (SICs) that work across defined benefit, defined contribution, insurance, endowment & foundations, and wealth management clients.

The Portfolio Construction Team (PCT) is part of the Multi Asset Team. The PCT is responsible for developing Mercer's intellectual capital and supporting the wider business on all matters relating to portfolio construction and Strategic Asset Allocation. A key part of this is developing Mercer's Global Reference Portfolios, promoting the adoption of these at the regional level and helping segment teams to tailor them for specific use cases.

We are seeking a Portfolio Construction Specialist to join the PCT in London, to focus on portfolio construction for the UK and European region and to contribute to the development of regional and global intellectual capital.

The candidate will possess strong analytical skills, a good understanding of investment theory, asset classes and financial markets, together with excellent communication abilities. The candidate will need to have an analytical mind-set, intellectual curiosity, and a desire to build relationships with a wide range of subject matter specialists and investment practitioners both within and outside Mercer.

We will count on you to:

  • Regional Portfolio Construction:
    • Contribute to our work on the implementation of Global Reference Portfolios in the UK and European region. This will involve working with the regional SICs, European AAC and other stakeholders to develop and maintain segment model portfolios that meet client objectives and reflect Mercer's portfolio construction principles.
    • Acting as a first point of contact for the SICs for technical queries on Portfolio Construction topics.
  • Global Intellectual Capital:
    • Contributing to the development and evolution of Global Reference Portfolios.
    • Idea generation including contributing to and leading the research, drafting and delivery of intellectual capital papers and presentations on the full range of Portfolio Construction topics.
    • Building relationships with our Strategic Research, Sustainable Investment, Capital Market Assumptions and Asset Class research teams (including Private Markets) so we can ensure Mercer's thinking is consistently reflected in PCT intellectual capital and Global Reference Portfolios.
    • Presenting ideas and proposals to the Global Asset Allocation Committee for approval.
  • Data Analysis:
    • Collaborating with analysts in the MAT and other Mercer teams on portfolio analytics to support the development of Global Reference Portfolios.
    • Developing and maintaining risk/performance factsheets and dashboards for Global Reference Portfolios to support decision making and evidence the benefits of these portfolios.

  • Analytical mind-set with the ability to interpret data and draw meaningful insights.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to build relationships, negotiate effectively and problem solve with a wide range of internal stakeholders.
  • Eagerness to learn and contribute in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in Excel and PowerPoint.

What makes you stand out:

  • CFA and/or ability to demonstrate strong interest in financial markets, investing, portfolio construction theory and macroeconomics.
  • Sufficient years' experience in a portfolio construction, investment specialist, asset allocation or similar role.
  • Python coding skills and/or experience with investment risk analytics systems (e.g. MSCI Barra) would be additional differentiators.
