We are excited to be developing our nursing provision for Paediatric Oncology and Haematology services and have a range of job opportunities at both band 5 and 6 across inpatient and outpatients areas. We are looking for enthusiastic, motivated and committed individuals who are passionate in caring for children with cancer to join and enhance our team.

Main duties of the job

Cambridge University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (CUH) is the Primary Treatment Centre for children aged 0-16, who require care in all aspects of Haematology/Oncology throughout the East of England region. The care provided ranges from inpatient and outpatient chemotherapy, Radiotherapy, Stem Cell Transplantation as well as a newly implemented service providing Bone Marrow Transplantation. CUH also participates in a range of national research trials and studies in order to develop the care for future generations

We believe in supporting our patients, their families and our staff, so we offer a diverse range of dedicated paediatric psycho-social and clinical support services.

We actively encourage our staff to develop and offer numerous opportunities to extend your skills and experience within this speciality. Opportunities include developing chemotherapy administration skills, access to post registration education for high dependency care, bone marrow transplantation and oncology

Working for our organisation

Band 5 Nurse:

As a band 5 nurse, you will be responsible for competently providing safe and effective care to children, whilst in hospital with various Haematological and Oncological conditions. You will need to be able to assess their care needs, as well as plan, implement and evaluate care given. Furthermore, you will also participate in the supervision and teaching of unqualified and qualified staff. As a band 5 you will also develop your own skills in the safe administration of medication via various routes, including the administration of chemotherapy as a senior band 5 nurse, alongside taking charge of the ward.

Band 6 Nurse:

As a band 6 you will need to be able to demonstrate significant competence at leading shifts, knowledge and experience in Paediatric Haematology and Oncology, and will need to be competent in chemotherapy administration. A post registration Paediatric Oncology course is required or a commitment to undertake this within the year for all band 6 roles.

You will be expected to manage a team in order to undertake appraisals and support the implementation of personal development plans, particularly by facilitating clinical objectives, whilst at all times work within the framework of the NMC code of professional conduct, NICE guidelines and hospital policy.

Furthermore, as a Band 6 Junior Sister/Charge Nurse your responsibilities will not only be ward based, but you will be expected to carry the Senior Nurse Bleep on an ad hoc basis, attending Paediatric Cardiac Arrest

Band 6 Clinical Practice Facilitator:

Your role is pivotal in supporting the training and development of all bands of staff, ensuring the provision of a positive learning environment in which staff can maximise their full potential and ensuring the nursing workforce is able to deliver the care required for the patient group.
